Ezequiel 17

La vid y el águila

1 El SEÑOR me dirigió la palabra:

2 «Hijo de hombre: Plantéale al pueblo de Israel este enigma, y nárrale esta parábola.

3 Adviértele que así dice el SEÑOR:»Llegó al Líbano un águila enorme,de grandes alas, tupido plumaje y vivos colores.Se posó sobre la copa de un cedro,

4 y arrancó el retoño más alto.Lo llevó a un país de mercaderes,y lo plantó en una ciudad de comerciantes.

5 Tomó luego semilla de aquel paísy la plantó en terreno fértil.La sembró como un sauce,junto a aguas abundantes.

6 La semilla germinóy se hizo una vid frondosa, de poca altura;volvió sus ramas hacia el águila,y hundió sus raíces bajo sí misma.Así se convirtió en una vidcon retoños y exuberante follaje.

7 Pero había otra águila grande,de gigantescas alas y abundante plumaje.Y la vid volvió sus raícesy orientó sus ramas hacia ella,para recibir más aguade la que ya tenía.

8 ¡Había estado plantada en tierra fértiljunto a aguas abundantes,para echar retoños y dar frutos,y convertirse en una hermosa vid!

9 »Adviértele que así dice el SEÑOR:»¿Prosperará esa vid?¿El águila no la arrancará de raíz?¿No le quitará su fruto,y así la vid se marchitará?Sí, los tiernos retoños se secarán.No hará falta un brazo fuerte ni mucha gentepara arrancarla de cuajo.

10 ¿Prosperará aunque sea trasplantada?¿Acaso el viento del esteno la marchitará cuando la azote?¡claro que sí se marchitaráen el lugar donde había nacido!»

11 El SEÑOR me dirigió la palabra:

12 «Pregúntale a este pueblo rebelde si tiene idea de lo que significa todo esto. Recuérdale que el rey de Babilonia vino a Jerusalén y se llevó a su país al rey de Judá y a sus funcionarios.

13 Luego tomó a uno de la familia real y lo obligó a firmar con él un tratado bajo juramento, y se llevó a la flor y nata del país.

14 Esto lo hizo para humillar a Judá. Así le impidió sublevarse y lo obligó a cumplir el tratado para poder subsistir.

15 Sin embargo, este príncipe se rebeló contra el rey de Babilonia, y envió mensajeros a Egipto para conseguir caballos y un numeroso ejército. ¿Y tendrá éxito y podrá escapar el que se atreva a hacer esto? ¿Acaso podrá violar el tratado y salir con vida?

16 ¡No, sino que morirá en Babilonia, el país del rey que lo nombró y con quien hizo un juramento que no cumplió, y firmó un tratado que violó! Yo, el SEÑOR omnipotente, lo juro por mí mismo.

17 Ni el faraón con su gran ejército y numerosas tropas podrá auxiliarlo en la guerra, cuando se levanten rampas y se construyan torres de asalto para matar a mucha gente.

18 El príncipe de Judá quebrantó el juramento y violó el tratado. Así que por haber hecho todo esto a pesar de su compromiso, ¡no escapará!

19 »Por tanto, así dice el SEÑOR omnipotente: “Juro por mí mismo que lo castigaré por haber faltado al juramento y violado el tratado.

20 Le tenderé mis redes, y caerá en mi trampa. Lo llevaré a Babilonia, y allí lo someteré a juicio por haberme sido infiel.

21 Lo mejor^[a] de sus tropas caerá a filo de espada, y los que aún queden con vida serán esparcidos a los cuatro vientos. Así sabrán que yo, el SEÑOR, lo he dicho.

22 »”Así dice el SEÑOR omnipotente:»”De la copa de un cedro tomaré un retoño,de las ramas más altas arrancaré un brote,y lo plantaré sobre un cerro muy elevado.

23 Lo plantaré sobre el cerromás alto de Israel,para que eche ramas y produzca frutoy se convierta en un magnífico cedro.Toda clase de aves anidará en él,y vivirá a la sombra de sus ramas.

24 Y todos los árboles del camposabrán que yo soy el SEÑOR.Al árbol grande lo corto,y al pequeño lo hago crecer.Al árbol verde lo seco,y al seco, lo hago florecer.Yo, el SEÑOR, lo he dicho,y lo cumpliré”».

Chapter 17

A parable relative to the Jewish nation. (1-10) to which an explanation is added. (11-21) A direct promise of the Messiah. (22-24)

Verses 1-10 Mighty conquerors are aptly likened to birds or beasts of prey, but their destructive passions are overruled to forward God's designs. Those who depart from God, only vary their crimes by changing one carnal confidence for another, and never will prosper.

Verses 11-21 The parable is explained, and the particulars of the history of the Jewish nation at that time may be traced. Zedekiah had been ungrateful to his benefactor, which is a sin against God. In every solemn oath, God is appealed to as a witness of the sincerity of him that swears. Truth is a debt owing to all men. If the professors of the true religion deal treacherously with those of a false religion, their profession makes their sin the worse; and God will the more surely and severely punish it. The Lord will not hold those guiltless who take his name in vain; and no man shall escape the righteous judgment of God who dies under unrepented guilt.

Verses 22-24 The unbelief of man shall not make the promise of God of none effect. The parable of a tree, used in the threatening, is here presented in the promise. It appears only applicable to Jesus, the Son of David, the Messiah of God. The kingdom of Satan, which has borne so long, so large a sway, shall be broken, and the kingdom of Christ, which was looked upon with contempt, shall be established. Blessed be God, our Redeemer is seen even by the ends of the earth. We may find refuge from the wrath to come, and from every enemy and danger, under his shadow; and believers are fruitful in him.

INTRODUCTION TO EZEKIEL 17

Under the simile of two eagles and a vine are represented the kings of Babylon and Egypt, and the condition of the Jews, who are threatened with ruin for their perfidy; and yet a promise is made of the raising up of the house of Judah, and family of David, in the Messiah. The prophet is bid to deliver a riddle or parable to the house of Israel, Eze 17:1,2. The riddle or parable is concerning two eagles and a vine, which is delivered, Eze 17:3-10; and the explanation of it is in Eze 17:11-15; and then the destruction of the Jews is threatened for their treachery to the king of Babylon, Eze 17:16-21; and the chapter is closed with a promise of the Messiah, and the prosperity of his kingdom, Eze 17:22-24.
