Parábola del sembrador

1 De nuevo comenzó Jesús a enseñar a la orilla del lago. La multitud que se reunió para verlo era tan grande que él subió y se sentó en una barca que estaba en el lago, mientras toda la gente se quedaba en la playa.

2 Entonces se puso a enseñarles muchas cosas por medio de parábolas y, como parte de su instrucción, les dijo:

3 «¡Pongan atención! Un sembrador salió a sembrar.

4 Sucedió que al esparcir él la semilla, una parte cayó junto al camino, y llegaron los pájaros y se la comieron.

5 Otra parte cayó en terreno pedregoso, sin mucha tierra. Esa semilla brotó pronto porque la tierra no era profunda;

6 pero cuando salió el sol, las plantas se marchitaron y, por no tener raíz, se secaron.

7 Otra parte de la semilla cayó entre espinos que, al crecer, la ahogaron, de modo que no dio fruto.

8 Pero las otras semillas cayeron en buen terreno. Brotaron, crecieron y produjeron una cosecha que rindió el treinta, el sesenta y hasta el ciento por uno.

9 »El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga», añadió Jesús.

10 Cuando se quedó solo, los doce y los que estaban alrededor de él le hicieron preguntas sobre las parábolas.

11 «A ustedes se les ha revelado el secreto del reino de Dios —les contestó—; pero a los de afuera todo les llega por medio de parábolas,

12 para que»“por mucho que vean, no perciban;y por mucho que oigan, no entiendan;no sea que se conviertan y sean perdonados”.^[a]

13 »¿No entienden esta parábola? —continuó Jesús—. ¿Cómo podrán, entonces, entender las demás?

14 El sembrador siembra la palabra.

15 Algunos son como lo sembrado junto al camino, donde se siembra la palabra. Tan pronto como la oyen, viene Satanás y les quita la palabra sembrada en ellos.

16 Otros son como lo sembrado en terreno pedregoso: cuando oyen la palabra, en seguida la reciben con alegría,

17 pero como no tienen raíz, duran poco tiempo. Cuando surgen problemas o persecución a causa de la palabra, en seguida se apartan de ella.

18 Otros son como lo sembrado entre espinos: oyen la palabra,

19 pero las preocupaciones de esta vida, el engaño de las riquezas y muchos otros malos deseos entran hasta ahogar la palabra, de modo que esta no llega a dar fruto.

20 Pero otros son como lo sembrado en buen terreno: oyen la palabra, la aceptan y producen una cosecha que rinde el treinta, el sesenta y hasta el ciento por uno».

Una lámpara en una repisa

21 También les dijo: «¿Acaso se trae una lámpara para ponerla debajo de un cajón o debajo de la cama? ¿No es, por el contrario, para ponerla en una repisa?

22 No hay nada escondido que no esté destinado a descubrirse; tampoco hay nada oculto que no esté destinado a ser revelado.

23 El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga.

24 »Pongan mucha atención —añadió—. Con la medida que midan a otros, se les medirá a ustedes, y aún más se les añadirá.

25 Al que tiene, se le dará más; al que no tiene, hasta lo poco que tiene se le quitará».

Parábola de la semilla que crece

26 Jesús continuó: «El reino de Dios se parece a quien esparce semilla en la tierra.

27 Sin que este sepa cómo, y ya sea que duerma o esté despierto, día y noche brota y crece la semilla.

28 La tierra da fruto por sí sola; primero el tallo, luego la espiga, y después el grano lleno en la espiga.

29 Tan pronto como el grano está maduro, se le mete la hoz, pues ha llegado el tiempo de la cosecha».

Parábola del grano de mostaza

30 También dijo: «¿Con qué vamos a comparar el reino de Dios? ¿Qué parábola podemos usar para describirlo?

31 Es como un grano de mostaza: cuando se siembra en la tierra, es la semilla más pequeña que hay,

32 pero una vez sembrada crece hasta convertirse en la más grande de las hortalizas, y echa ramas tan grandes que las aves pueden anidar bajo su sombra».

33 Y con muchas parábolas semejantes les enseñaba Jesús la palabra hasta donde podían entender.

34 No les decía nada sin emplear parábolas. Pero cuando estaba a solas con sus discípulos, les explicaba todo.

Jesús calma la tormenta

35 Ese día al anochecer, les dijo a sus discípulos:—Crucemos al otro lado.

36 Dejaron a la multitud y se fueron con él en la barca donde estaba. También lo acompañaban otras barcas.

37 Se desató entonces una fuerte tormenta, y las olas azotaban la barca, tanto que ya comenzaba a inundarse.

38 Jesús, mientras tanto, estaba en la popa, durmiendo sobre un cabezal, así que los discípulos lo despertaron.—¡Maestro! —gritaron—, ¿no te importa que nos ahoguemos?

39 Él se levantó, reprendió al viento y ordenó al mar:—¡Silencio! ¡Cálmate!El viento se calmó y todo quedó completamente tranquilo.

40 —¿Por qué tienen tanto miedo? —dijo a sus discípulos—. ¿Todavía^[b] no tienen fe?

41 Ellos estaban espantados y se decían unos a otros:—¿Quién es este, que hasta el viento y el mar le obedecen?

Chapter 4

The parable of the sower. (1-20) Other parables. (21-34) Christ stills the tempest. (35-41)

Verses 1-20 This parable contained instruction so important, that all capable of hearing were bound to attend to it. There are many things we are concerned to know; and if we understand not the plain truths of the gospel, how shall we learn those more difficult! It will help us to value the privileges we enjoy as disciples of Christ, if we seriously consider the deplorable state of all who have not such privileges. In the great field of the church, the word of God is dispensed to all. Of the many that hear the word of the gospel, but few receive it, so as to bring forth fruit. Many are much affected with the word for the present, who yet receive no abiding benefit. The word does not leave abiding impressions upon the minds of men, because their hearts are not duly disposed to receive it. The devil is very busy about careless hearers, as the fowls of the air go about the seed that lies above ground. Many continue in a barren, false profession, and go down to hell. Impressions that are not deep, will not last. Many do not mind heart-work, without which religion is nothing. Others are hindered from profiting by the word of God, by abundance of the world. And those who have but little of the world, may yet be ruined by indulging the body. God expects and requires fruit from those who enjoy the gospel, a temper of mind and Christian graces daily exercised, Christian duties duly performed. Let us look to the Lord, that by his new-creating grace our hearts may become good ground, and that the good seed of the word may produce in our lives those good words and works which are through Jesus Christ, to the praise and glory of God the Father.

Verses 21-34 These declarations were intended to call the attention of the disciples to the word of Christ. By his thus instructing them, they were made able to instruct others; as candles are lighted, not to be covered, but to be placed on a candlestick, that they may give light to a room. This parable of the good seed, shows the manner in which the kingdom of God makes progress in the world. Let but the word of Christ have the place it ought to have in a soul, and it will show itself in a good conversation. It grows gradually: first the blade; then the ear; after that the full corn in the ear. When it is sprung up, it will go forward. The work of grace in the soul is, at first, but the day of small things; yet it has mighty products even now, while it is in its growth; but what will there be when it is perfected in heaven!

Verses 35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray. Their faith appeared weak, and their prayers strong. When our wicked hearts are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, when our passions are unruly, let us think we hear the law of Christ, saying, Be silent, be dumb. When without are fightings, and within are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult, if he say, "Peace, be still," there is a great calm at once. Why are ye so fearful? Though there may be cause for some fear, yet not for such fear as this. Those may suspect their faith, who can have such a thought as that Jesus careth not though his people perish. How imperfect are the best of saints! Faith and fear take their turns while we are in this world; but ere long, fear will be overcome, and faith will be lost in sight.
