Esdras 3

A Reconstrução do Altar

1 Quando chegou o sétimo mês e os israelitas já estavam em suas cidades, o povo se reuniu como um só homem em Jerusalém.

2 Então Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e seus colegas, os sacerdotes, e Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, e seus companheiros começaram a construir o altar do Deus de Israel para nele sacrificarem holocaustos,^[a] conforme o que está escrito na Lei de Moisés, homem de Deus.

3 Apesar do receio que tinham dos povos ao redor, construíram o altar sobre a sua base e nele sacrificaram holocaustos ao SENHOR, tanto os sacrifícios da manhã como os da tarde.

4 Depois, de acordo com o que está escrito, celebraram a festa das cabanas^[b] com o número determinado de holocaustos prescritos para cada dia.

5 A seguir apresentaram os holocaustos regulares, os sacrifícios da lua nova e os sacrifícios requeridos para todas as festas sagradas determinadas pelo SENHOR, bem como os que foram trazidos como ofertas voluntárias ao SENHOR.

6 A partir do primeiro dia do sétimo mês começaram a oferecer holocaustos ao SENHOR, embora ainda não tivessem sido lançados os alicerces do templo do SENHOR.

A Reconstrução do Templo

7 Então eles deram dinheiro aos pedreiros e aos carpinteiros, e deram comida, bebida e azeite ao povo de Sidom e de Tiro, para que, pelo mar, trouxessem do Líbano para Jope toras de cedro. Isso tinha sido autorizado por Ciro, rei da Pérsia.

8 No segundo mês do segundo ano depois de chegarem ao templo de Deus em Jerusalém, Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e o restante dos seus irmãos—os sacerdotes, os levitas e todos os que tinham voltado do cativeiro para Jerusalém—começaram o trabalho, designando levitas de vinte anos para cima para supervisionarem a construção do templo do SENHOR.

9 Jesua, seus filhos e seus irmãos, e Cadmiel e seus filhos, descendentes de Hodavias,^[c] e os filhos de Henadade e seus filhos e seus irmãos, todos eles levitas, uniram-se para supervisionar os que trabalhavam no templo de Deus.

10 Quando os construtores lançaram os alicerces do templo do SENHOR, os sacerdotes, com suas vestes e suas trombetas, e os levitas, filhos de Asafe, com címbalos, tomaram seus lugares para louvar o SENHOR, conforme prescrito por Davi, rei de Israel.

11 Com louvor e ações de graças, cantaram responsivamente ao SENHOR:“Ele é bom;seu amor a Israel dura para sempre”.E todo o povo louvou o SENHOR em alta voz, pois haviam sido lançados os alicerces do templo do SENHOR.

12 Mas muitos dos sacerdotes, dos levitas e dos chefes das famílias mais velhos, que tinham visto o antigo templo, choraram em alta voz quando viram o lançamento dos alicerces desse templo; muitos, porém, gritavam de alegria.

13 Não era possível distinguir entre o som dos gritos de alegria e o som do choro, pois o povo fazia enorme barulho. E o som foi ouvido a grande distância.

Chapter 3

The altar and festivals. (1-7) The foundations of the temple laid. (8-13)

Verses 1-7 From the proceedings of the Jews on their arrival, let us learn to begin with God, and to do what we can in the worship of God, when we cannot do what we would. They could not at once have a temple, but they would not be without an altar. Fear of danger should stir us to our duty. Have we many enemies? Then it is good to have God our Friend, and to keep up communion with him. Our fears should drive us to our knees. The sacrifices for all these solemnities were a heavy expense for so poor a company; yet besides those expressly appointed, many brought free-will offerings to the Lord. And they made preparation for the building of the temple without delay: whatever God calls us to do, we may depend upon his providence to furnish us with the needful means.

Verses 8-13 There was a remarkable mixture of affections upon laying the foundation of the temple. Those that only knew the misery of having no temple at all, praised the Lord with shouts of joy. To them, even this foundation seemed great. We ought to be thankful for the beginnings of mercy, though it be not yet perfect. But those who remembered the glory of the first temple, and considered how far inferior this was likely to be, wept with a loud voice. There was reason for it, and if they bewailed the sin that was the cause of this melancholy change, they did well. Yet it was wrong to cast a damp upon the common joys. They despised the day of small things, and were unthankful for the good they enjoyed. Let not the remembrance of former afflictions drown the sense of present mercies.

This chapter relates how that the people of Israel returned from captivity, gathered to Jerusalem, and set up the altar, where sacrifices were offered, Ezr 3:1-3, and kept the feast of tabernacles, and offered the sacrifices of that, besides the daily sacrifice, and of other festivals; and contributed to the workmen that prepared for the building of the temple, Ezr 3:4-7 and began it by laying the foundation of it; which to some was matter of joy, to others of grief, on different accounts, Ezr 3:8-13.
