New International Version NIV
Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible RHE
1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:
1
The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech who am myself also an ancient and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come:
2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;
2
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre’s sake but voluntarily:
3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
3
Neither as lording it over the clergy but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart.
4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
4
And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory.
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
5
In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another: for God resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace.
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
6
Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation:
7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
7
Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you.
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
8
Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.
9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
9
Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls, your brethren who are in the world.
10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
10
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you and confirm you and establish you.
11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
11
To him be glory and empire, for ever and ever. Amen.
12 With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
12
By Sylvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I think, I have written briefly: beseeching and testifying that this is the true grace of God, wherein you stand.
13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.
13
The church that is in Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you. And so doth my son, Mark.
14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
14
Salute one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all you who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
