Luke 21

ESV

MSG

1 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box,
1 Just then he looked up and saw the rich people dropping offerings in the collection plate.
2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.
2 Then he saw a poor widow put in two pennies.
3 And he said, "Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.
3 He said, "The plain truth is that this widow has given by far the largest offering today.
4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."
4 All these others made offerings that they'll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn't afford - she gave her all!"
5 And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said,
5 One day people were standing around talking about the Temple, remarking how beautiful it was, the splendor of its stonework and memorial gifts. Jesus said,
6 "As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down."
6 "All this you're admiring so much - the time is coming when every stone in that building will end up in a heap of rubble."
7 And they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?"
7 They asked him, "Teacher, when is this going to happen? What clue will we get that it's about to take place?"
8 And he said, "See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them.
8 He said, "Watch out for the doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, 'I'm the One,' or, 'The end is near.' Don't fall for any of that.
9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once."
9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, keep your head and don't panic. This is routine history and no sign of the end."
10 Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
10 He went on, "Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over.
11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
11 Huge earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. You'll think at times that the very sky is falling.
12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.
12 "But before any of this happens, they'll arrest you, hunt you down, and drag you to court and jail. It will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name.
13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness.
13 You'll end up on the witness stand, called to testify.
14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,
14 Make up your mind right now not to worry about it.
15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.
15 I'll give you the words and wisdom that will reduce all your accusers to stammers and stutters.
16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.
16 "You'll even be turned in by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you will be killed.
17 You will be hated by all for my name's sake.
17 There's no telling who will hate you because of me.
18 But not a hair of your head will perish.
18 Even so, every detail of your body and soul - even the hairs of your head! - is in my care; nothing of you will be lost.
19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.
19 Staying with it - that's what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won't be sorry; you'll be saved.
20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.
20 "When you see soldiers camped all around Jerusalem, then you'll know that she is about to be devastated.
21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it,
21 If you're living in Judea at the time, run for the hills. If you're in the city, get out quickly. If you're out in the fields, don't go home to get your coat.
22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.
22 This is Vengeance Day - everything written about it will come to a head.
23 Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people.
23 Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. Incredible misery! Torrential rage!
24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
24 People dropping like flies; people dragged off to prisons; Jerusalem under the boot of barbarians until the nations finish what was given them to do.
25 "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,
25 "It will seem like all hell has broken loose - sun, moon, stars, earth, sea,
26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
26 in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be quaking.
27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
27 "And then - then! - they'll see the Son of Man welcomed in grand style - a glorious welcome!
28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
28 When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way!"
29 And he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.
29 He told them a story. "Look at a fig tree. Any tree for that matter.
30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near.
30 When the leaves begin to show, one look tells you that summer is right around the corner.
31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
31 The same here - when you see these things happen, you know God's kingdom is about here.
32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place.
32 Don't brush this off: I'm not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too - these things will happen.
33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
33 Sky and earth will wear out; my words won't wear out.
34 "But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.
34 "But be on your guard. Don't let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap,
35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.
35 for it's going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once.
36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."
36 So, whatever you do, don't go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that's coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man."
37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet.
37 He spent his days in the Temple teaching, but his nights out on the mountain called Olives.
38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.
38 All the people were up at the crack of dawn to come to the Temple and listen to him.
