Mark 13

CEB 1 As Jesus left the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look! What awesome stones and buildings!" NRS 1 As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!" CEB 2 Jesus responded, "Do you see these enormous buildings? Not even one stone will be left upon another. All will be demolished." NRS 2 Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down." CEB 3 Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, NRS 3 When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, CEB 4 "Tell us, when will these things happen? What sign will show that all these things are about to come to an end?" NRS 4 "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" CEB 5 Jesus said, “Watch out that no one deceives you. NRS 5 Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware that no one leads you astray. CEB 6 Many people will come in my name, saying, ‘I'm the one!' They will deceive many people. NRS 6 Many will come in my name and say, "I am he!' and they will lead many astray. CEB 7 When you hear of wars and reports of wars, don't be alarmed. These things must happen, but this isn't the end yet. NRS 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. CEB 8 Nations and kingdoms will fight against each other, and there will be earthquakes and famines in all sorts of places. These things are just the beginning of the sufferings associated with the end. NRS 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. CEB 9 “Watch out for yourselves. People will hand you over to the councils. You will be beaten in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me so that you can testify before them. NRS 9 "As for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them. CEB 10 First, the good news must be proclaimed to all the nations. NRS 10 And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. CEB 11 When they haul you in and hand you over, don't worry ahead of time about what to answer or say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that moment, for you aren't doing the speaking but the Holy Spirit is. NRS 11 When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. CEB 12 Brothers and sisters will hand each other over to death. A father will turn in his children. Children will rise up against their parents and have them executed. NRS 12 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; CEB 13 Everyone will hate you because of my name. But whoever stands firm until the end will be saved. NRS 13 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. CEB 14 “When you see the disgusting and destructive thing standing where it shouldn't be (the reader should understand this), then those in Judea must escape to the mountains. NRS 14 "But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains; CEB 15 Those on the roof shouldn't come down or enter their houses to grab anything. NRS 15 the one on the housetop must not go down or enter the house to take anything away; CEB 16 Those in the field shouldn't come back to grab their clothes. NRS 16 the one in the field must not turn back to get a coat. CEB 17 How terrible it will be at that time for women who are pregnant and for women who are nursing their children. NRS 17 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! CEB 18 Pray that it doesn't happen in winter. NRS 18 Pray that it may not be in winter. CEB 19 In those days there will be great suffering such as the world has never before seen and will never again see. NRS 19 For in those days there will be suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, no, and never will be. CEB 20 If the Lord hadn't shortened that time, no one would be rescued. But for the sake of the chosen ones, the ones whom God chose, he has cut short the time. NRS 20 And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut short those days. CEB 21 “Then if someone says to you, ‘Look, here's the Christ,' or ‘There he is,' don't believe it. NRS 21 And if anyone says to you at that time, "Look! Here is the Messiah!' or "Look! There he is!'—do not believe it. CEB 22 False christs and false prophets will appear, and they will offer signs and wonders in order to deceive, if possible, those whom God has chosen. NRS 22 False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. CEB 23 But you, watch out! I've told you everything ahead of time. NRS 23 But be alert; I have already told you everything. CEB 24 “In those days, after the suffering of that time, the sun will become dark, and the moon won't give its light. NRS 24 "But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, CEB 25 The stars will fall from the sky, and the planets and other heavenly bodies will be shaken. NRS 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. CEB 26 Then they will see the Human One coming in the clouds with great power and splendor. NRS 26 Then they will see "the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. CEB 27 Then he will send the angels and gather together his chosen people from the four corners of the earth, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven. NRS 27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. CEB 28 “Learn this parable from the fig tree. After its branch becomes tender and it sprouts new leaves, you know that summer is near. NRS 28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. CEB 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that he's near, at the door. NRS 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. CEB 30 I assure you that this generation won't pass away until all these things happen. NRS 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. CEB 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away. NRS 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. CEB 32 "But nobody knows when that day or hour will come, not the angels in heaven and not the Son. Only the Father knows. NRS 32 "But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. CEB 33 Watch out! Stay alert! You don't know when the time is coming. NRS 33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. CEB 34 It is as if someone took a trip, left the household behind, and put the servants in charge, giving each one a job to do, and told the doorkeeper to stay alert. NRS 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. CEB 35 Therefore, stay alert! You don't know when the head of the household will come, whether in the evening or at midnight, or when the rooster crows in the early morning or at daybreak. NRS 35 Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, CEB 36 Don't let him show up when you weren't expecting and find you sleeping. NRS 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. CEB 37 What I say to you, I say to all: Stay alert!" NRS 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake."
