Job 28

HNV

MSG

1 "Surely there is a mine for silver, And a place for gold which they refine.
1 "We all know how silver seams the rocks, we've seen the stuff from which gold is refined,
2 Iron is taken out of the eretz, And copper is smelted out of the ore.
2 We're aware of how iron is dug out of the ground and copper is smelted from rock.
3 Man sets an end to darkness, And searches out, to the furthest bound, The stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.
3 Miners penetrate the earth's darkness, searching the roots of the mountains for ore, digging away in the suffocating darkness.
4 He breaks open a shaft away from where people live. They are forgotten by the foot. They hang far from men, they swing back and forth.
4 Far from civilization, far from the traffic, they cut a shaft, and are lowered into it by ropes.
5 As for the eretz, out of it comes bread; Underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.
5 Earth's surface is a field for grain, but its depths are a forge
6 Sapphires come from its rocks. It has dust of gold.
6 Firing sapphires from stones and chiseling gold from rocks.
7 That path no bird of prey knows, Neither has the falcon's eye seen it.
7 Vultures are blind to its riches, hawks never lay eyes on it.
8 The proud animals have not trodden it, Nor has the fierce lion passed by there.
8 Wild animals are oblivious to it, lions don't know it's there.
9 He puts forth his hand on the flinty rock, And he overturns the mountains by the roots.
9 Miners hammer away at the rock, they uproot the mountains.
10 He cuts out channels among the rocks. His eye sees every precious thing.
10 They tunnel through the rock and find all kinds of beautiful gems.
11 He binds the streams that they don't trickle; The thing that is hidden he brings forth to light.
11 They discover the origins of rivers, and bring earth's secrets to light.
12 "But where shall wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?
12 "But where, oh where, will they find Wisdom? Where does Insight hide?
13 Man doesn't know its price; Neither is it found in the land of the living.
13 Mortals don't have a clue, haven't the slightest idea where to look.
14 The deep says, 'It isn't in me.' The sea says, 'It isn't with me.'
14 Earth's depths say, 'It's not here'; ocean deeps echo, 'Never heard of it.'
15 It can't be gotten for gold, Neither shall silver be weighed for its price.
15 It can't be bought with the finest gold; no amount of silver can get it.
16 It can't be valued with the gold of Ofir, With the precious shoham, or the sappir.
16 Even famous Ophir gold can't buy it, not even diamonds and sapphires.
17 Gold and zekukeet can't equal it, Neither shall it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.
17 Neither gold nor emeralds are comparable; extravagant jewelry can't touch it.
18 No mention shall be made of ra`mah or of gabeesh: Yes, the price of wisdom is above rubies.
18 Pearl necklaces and ruby bracelets - why bother? None of this is even a down payment on Wisdom!
19 The pitdah of Kush shall not equal it, Neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
19 Pile gold and African diamonds as high as you will, they can't hold a candle to Wisdom.
20 Whence then comes wisdom? Where is the place of understanding?
20 "So where does Wisdom come from? And where does Insight live?
21 Seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the birds of the sky.
21 It can't be found by looking, no matter how deep you dig, no matter how high you fly.
22 Destruction and Death say, 'We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.'
22 If you search through the graveyard and question the dead, they say, 'We've only heard rumors of it.'
23 "God understands its way, And he knows its place.
23 "God alone knows the way to Wisdom, he knows the exact place to find it.
24 For he looks to the ends of the eretz, And sees under the whole sky.
24 He knows where everything is on earth, he sees everything under heaven.
25 He establishes the force of the wind; Yes, he measures out the waters by measure.
25 After he commanded the winds to blow and measured out the waters,
26 When he made a decree for the rain, And a way for the lightning of the thunder;
26 Arranged for the rain and set off explosions of thunder and lightning,
27 Then did he see it, and declare it. He established it, yes, and searched it out.
27 He focused on Wisdom, made sure it was all set and tested and ready.
28 To man he said, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.'"
28 Then he addressed the human race: 'Here it is! Fear-of-the-Lord - that's Wisdom, and Insight means shunning evil.'"
