1 ¿SACARAS tú al leviathán con el anzuelo, O con la cuerda que le echares en su lengua?

"Can you pull Leviathan out [of the water] with a fishhook or tie its tongue down with a rope?
2 ¿Pondrás tú garfio en sus narices, Y horadarás con espinas su quijada?

Can you put a ring through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3 ¿Multiplicará él ruegos para contigo? ¿Hablaráte él lisonjas?

Will it plead with you for mercy or speak tenderly to you?
4 ¿Hará concierto contigo Para que lo tomes por siervo perpetuo?

Will it make an agreement with you so that you can take it as your permanent slave?
5 ¿Jugarás tú con él como con pájaro, O lo atarás para tus niñas?

Can you play with it like a bird or keep it on a leash for your girls?
6 ¿Harán de él banquete los compañeros? ¿Partiránlo entre los mercaderes?

Will traders bargain over it and divide it among the merchants?
7 ¿Cortarás tú con cuchillo su cuero, O con asta de pescadores su cabeza?

Can you fill its hide with harpoons or its head with fishing spears?
8 Pon tu mano sobre él; Te acordarás de la batalla, y nunca más tornarás.

Lay your hand on it. Think of the struggle! Don't do it again!
9 He aquí que la esperanza acerca de él será burlada; Porque aun á su sola vista se desmayarán.

Certainly, any hope [of defeating it] is a false hope. Doesn't the sight of it overwhelm you?
10 Nadie hay tan osado que lo despierte: ¿Quién pues podrá estar delante de mí?

No one is brave enough to provoke Leviathan. Then who can stand in front of me?
11 ¿Quién me ha anticipado, para que yo restituya? Todo lo que hay debajo del cielo es mío.

Who can confront me that I should repay him? Everything under heaven belongs to me!
12 Yo no callaré sus miembros, Ni lo de sus fuerzas y la gracia de su disposición.

"I will not be silent about Leviathan's limbs, its strength, or its graceful form.
13 ¿Quién descubrirá la delantera de su vestidura? ¿Quién se llegará á él con freno doble?

Who can skin its hide? Who can approach it with a harness?
14 ¿Quién abrirá las puertas de su rostro? Los órdenes de sus dientes espantan.

Who can open its closed mouth? Its teeth are surrounded by terror.
15 La gloria de su vestido son escudos fuertes, Cerrados entre sí estrechamente.

Its back has rows of scales that are tightly sealed.
16 El uno se junta con el otro, Que viento no entra entre ellos.

One is so close to the other that there is no space between them.
17 Pegado está el uno con el otro, Están trabados entre sí, que no se pueden apartar.

Each is joined to the other. They are locked together and inseparable.
18 Con sus estornudos encienden lumbre, Y sus ojos son como los párpados del alba.

When Leviathan sneezes, it gives out a flash of light. Its eyes are like the first rays of the dawn.
19 De su boca salen hachas de fuego, Centellas de fuego proceden.

Flames shoot from its mouth. Sparks of fire fly from it.
20 De sus narices sale humo, Como de una olla ó caldero que hierve.

Smoke comes from its nostrils like a boiling pot heated over brushwood.
21 Su aliento enciende los carbones, Y de su boca sale llama.

Its breath sets coals on fire, and a flame pours from its mouth.
22 En su cerviz mora la fortaleza, Y espárcese el desaliento delante de él.

Strength resides in its neck, and power dances in front of it.
23 Las partes momias de su carne están apretadas: Están en él firmes, y no se mueven.

The folds of its flesh stick to each other. They are solid and cannot be moved.
24 Su corazón es firme como una piedra, Y fuerte como la muela de abajo.

Its chest is solid like a rock, solid like a millstone.
25 De su grandeza tienen temor los fuertes, Y á causa de su desfallecimiento hacen por purificarse.

"The mighty are afraid when Leviathan rises. Broken down, they draw back.
26 Cuando alguno lo alcanzare, ni espada, Ni lanza, ni dardo, ni coselete durará.

A sword may strike it but not pierce it. Neither will a spear, lance, or dart.
27 El hierro estima por pajas, Y el acero por leño podrido.

It considers iron to be like straw and bronze to be like rotten wood.
28 Saeta no le hace huir; Las piedras de honda se le tornan aristas.

An arrow won't make it run away. Stones from a sling turn to dust against it.
29 Tiene toda arma por hojarascas, Y del blandir de la pica se burla.

It considers clubs to be like stubble, and it laughs at a rattling javelin.
30 Por debajo tiene agudas conchas; Imprime su agudez en el suelo.

Its underside is like sharp pieces of broken pottery. It stretches out like a threshing sledge on the mud.
31 Hace hervir como una olla la profunda mar, Y tórnala como una olla de ungüento.

It makes the deep sea boil like a pot. It stirs up the ocean like a boiling kettle.
32 En pos de sí hace resplandecer la senda, Que parece que la mar es cana.

It leaves a shining path behind it so that the sea appears to have silvery hair.
33 No hay sobre la tierra su semejante, Hecho para nada temer.

Nothing on land can compare to it. It was made fearless.
34 Menosprecia toda cosa alta: Es rey sobre todos los soberbios.

It looks down on all high things. It is king of everyone who is arrogant."
