1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

One Shabbat, while Yeshua was passing through some wheat fields, his talmidim began plucking the heads of grain, rubbing them between their hands and eating the seeds.
2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

Some of the P'rushim said, "Why are you violating Shabbat?"
3 And Jesus answering them said,Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

Yeshua answered them, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

He entered the House of God and took and ate the Bread of the Presence" -- which no one is permitted to eat but the cohanim.
5 And he said unto them,That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

"The Son of Man," he concluded, "is Lord of Shabbat."
6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

On another Shabbat, when Yeshua had gone into the synagogue and was teaching, a man was there who had a shriveled hand.
7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

The Torah-teachers and P'rushim watched Yeshua carefully to see if he would heal on Shabbat, so that they could accuse him of something.
8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand,Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

But he knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Come up and stand where we can see you!" He got up and stood there.
9 Then said Jesus unto them,I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

Then Yeshua said to them, "I ask you now: what is permitted on Shabbat? Doing good or doing evil? Saving life or destroying it?"
10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man,Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

Then, after looking around at all of them, he said to the man, "Hold out your hand." As he held it out, his hand was restored.
11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

But the others were filled with fury and began discussing with each other what they could do to Yeshua.
12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

It was around that time that Yeshua went out to the hill country to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.
13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

When day came, he called his talmidim and chose from among them twelve to be known as emissaries:
14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

Shim`on, whom he named Kefa; Andrew, his brother; Ya`akov; Yochanan; Philip; Bar-Talmai;
15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

Mattityahu; T'oma; Ya`akov Ben-Halfai;
16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

Shim`on, the one called the Zealot; Y'hudah Ben-Ya`akov; and Y'hudah from K'riot, who turned traitor.
17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

Then he came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his talmidim was there with great numbers of people from all Y'hudah, Yerushalayim and the coast around Tzor and Tzidon; they had come to hear him and be healed of their diseases.
18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

Those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being healed;
19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

and the whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power kept going out from him, healing everyone.
20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said,Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
20
He looked at his talmidim and said: "How blessed are you poor! for the Kingdom of God is yours.
21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

"How blessed are you who are hungry! for you will be filled. "How blessed are you who are crying now! for you will laugh.
22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

"How blessed you are whenever people hate you and ostracize you and insult you and denounce you as a criminal on account of the Son of Man.
23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

Be glad when that happens; yes, dance for joy! because in heaven your reward is great. For that is just how their fathers treated the prophets.
24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

"But woe to you who are rich, for you have already had all the comfort you will get!
25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

"Woe to you who are full now, for you will go hungry! "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and cry!
26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

"Woe to you when people speak well of you, for that is just how their fathers treated the false prophets!
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
27
Nevertheless, to you who are listening, what I say is this: "Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.

"If someone hits you on one cheek, offer the other too; if someone takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

"If someone asks you for something, give it to him; if someone takes what belongs to you, don't demand it back.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

"Treat other people as you would like them to treat you.
32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

What credit is it to you if you love only those who love you? Why, even sinners love those who love them.
33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
33
What credit is it to you if you do good only to those who do good to you? Even sinners do that.
34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

What credit is it to you if you lend only to those who you expect will pay you back? Even sinners lend to each other, expecting to be repaid in full.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

But love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing back! Your reward will be great, and you will be children of Ha`Elyon; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

Show compassion, just as your Father shows compassion.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

"Don't judge, and you won't be judged. Don't condemn, and you won't be condemned. "Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
38
Give, and you will receive gifts -- the full measure, compacted, shaken together and overflowing, will be put right in your lap. For the measure with which you measure out will be used to measure back to you!"
39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

He also told them a parable: "Can one blind man lead another blind man? Won't they both fall into a pit?
40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

A talmid is not above his rabbi; but each one, when he is fully trained, will be like his rabbi.
41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

So why do you see the splinter in your brother's eye, but not notice the log in your own eye?
42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

How can you say to your brother, `Brother, let me remove the splinter from your eye,' when you yourself don't see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye; then you will see clearly, so that you can remove the splinter from your brother's eye!
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

"For no good tree produces bad fruit, nor does a bad tree produce good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

Each tree is recognized by its own fruit -- figs aren't picked from thorn bushes, nor grapes from a briar patch.
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

The good person produces good things from the store of good in his heart, while the evil person produces evil things from the store of evil in his heart. For his mouth speaks what overflows from his heart.
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

"Why do you call me, `Lord! Lord!' but not do what I say?
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
47
Everyone who comes to me, hears my words and acts on them -- I will show you what he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

he is like someone building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on bedrock. When a flood came, the torrent beat against that house but couldn't shake it, because it was constructed well.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

And whoever hears my words but doesn't act on them is like someone who built his house on the ground without any foundation. As soon as the river struck it, it collapsed and that house became a horrendous wreck!"
