Psalm 18

HNV

MSG

1 <<For the Chief Musician. By David, the servant of the LORD, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Sha'ul. He said,>> I love you, LORD, my strength.
1 I love you, God - you make me strong.
2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; My God, my rock, in whom I will take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.
2 God is bedrock under my feet, the castle in which I live, my rescuing knight. My God - the high crag where I run for dear life, hiding behind the boulders, safe in the granite hideout.
3 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.
3 I sing to God, the Praise-Lofty, and find myself safe and saved.
4 The cords of death surrounded me. The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
4 The hangman's noose was tight at my throat; devil waters rushed over me.
5 The cords of She'ol were round about me; The snares of death came on me.
5 Hell's ropes cinched me tight; death traps barred every exit.
6 In my distress I called on the LORD, And cried to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple, My cry before him came into his ears.
6 A hostile world! I call to God, I cry to God to help me. From his palace he hears my call; my cry brings me right into his presence - a private audience!
7 Then the eretz shook and trembled. The foundations also of the mountains quaked and were shaken, Because he was angry.
7 Earth wobbles and lurches; huge mountains shake like leaves, Quake like aspen leaves because of his rage.
8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, Fire out of his mouth devoured; Coals were kindled by it.
8 His nostrils flare, bellowing smoke; his mouth spits fire. Tongues of fire dart in and out;
9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down. Thick darkness was under his feet.
9 he lowers the sky. He steps down; under his feet an abyss opens up.
10 He rode on a Keruv, and flew. Yes, he soared on the wings of the wind.
10 He's riding a winged creature, swift on wind-wings.
11 He made darkness his hiding-place, his pavilion around him, Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
11 Now he's wrapped himself in a trenchcoat of black-cloud darkness.
12 At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed, Hailstones and coals of fire.
12 But his cloud-brightness bursts through, spraying hailstones and fireballs.
13 The LORD also thundered in the sky, The Elyon uttered his voice, Hailstones and coals of fire.
13 Then God thundered out of heaven; the High God gave a great shout, spraying hailstones and fireballs.
14 He sent out his arrows, and scattered them; Yes, lightnings manifold, and routed them.
14 God shoots his arrows - pandemonium! He hurls his lightnings - a rout!
15 Then the channels of waters appeared, The foundations of the world were laid bare, At your rebuke, LORD, At the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
15 The secret sources of ocean are exposed, the hidden depths of earth lie uncovered The moment you roar in protest, let loose your hurricane anger.
16 He sent from on high. He took me. He drew me out of many waters.
16 But me he caught - reached all the way from sky to sea; he pulled me out
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me.
17 that enemy chaos, the void in which I was drowning.
18 They came on me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my support.
18 They hit me when I was down, but God stuck by me.
19 He brought me forth also into a large place. He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
19 He stood me up on a wide-open field; I stood there saved - surprised to be loved!
20 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness. According to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me.
20 God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start.
21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God.
21 Now I'm alert to God's ways; I don't take God for granted.
22 For all his ordinances were before me. I didn't put away his statutes from me.
22 Every day I review the ways he works; I try not to miss a trick.
23 I was also blameless with him. I kept myself from my iniquity.
23 I feel put back together, and I'm watching my step.
24 Therefore has the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
24 God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.
25 With the merciful you will show yourself merciful. With the perfect man, you will show yourself perfect.
25 The good people taste your goodness, The whole people taste your health,
26 With the pure, you will show yourself pure. With the crooked you will show yourself shrewd.
26 The true people taste your truth, The bad ones can't figure you out.
27 For you will save the afflicted people, But the haughty eyes you will bring down.
27 You take the side of the down-and-out, But the stuck-up you take down a peg.
28 For you will light my lamp. The LORD, my God, will light up my darkness.
28 Suddenly, God, you floodlight my life; I'm blazing with glory, God's glory!
29 For by you, I advance through a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall.
29 I smash the bands of marauders, I vault the highest fences.
30 As for God, his way is perfect. The word of the LORD is tried. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.
30 What a God! His road stretches straight and smooth. Every God-direction is road-tested. Everyone who runs toward him Makes it.
31 For who is God, except the LORD? Who is a rock, besides our God,
31 Is there any god like God? Are we not at bedrock?
32 The God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect?
32 Is not this the God who armed me, then aimed me in the right direction?
33 He makes my feet like hinds' feet, And sets me on my high places.
33 Now I run like a deer; I'm king of the mountain.
34 He teaches my hands to war; So that my arms bend a bow of bronze.
34 He shows me how to fight; I can bend a bronze bow!
35 You have also given me the shield of your salvation. Your right hand sustains me. Your gentleness has made me great.
35 You protect me with salvation-armor; you hold me up with a firm hand, caress me with your gentle ways.
36 You have enlarged my steps under me, My feet have not slipped.
36 You cleared the ground under me so my footing was firm.
37 I will pursue my enemies, and overtake them. Neither will I turn again until they are consumed.
37 When I chased my enemies I caught them; I didn't let go till they were dead men.
38 I will strike them through, so that they will not be able to rise. They shall fall under my feet.
38 I nailed them; they were down for good; then I walked all over them.
39 For you have girded me with strength to the battle. You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
39 You armed me well for this fight, you smashed the upstarts.
40 You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, That I might cut off those who hate me.
40 You made my enemies turn tail, and I wiped out the haters.
41 They cried, but there was none to save; Even to the LORD, but he didn't answer them.
41 They cried "uncle" but Uncle didn't come; They yelled for God and got no for an answer.
42 Then I beat them small as the dust before the wind. I cast them out as the mire of the streets.
42 I ground them to dust; they gusted in the wind. I threw them out, like garbage in the gutter.
43 You have delivered me from the strivings of the people. You have made me the head of the nations. A people whom I have not known shall serve me.
43 You rescued me from a squabbling people; you made me a leader of nations. People I'd never heard of served me;
44 As soon as they hear of me they shall obey me. The foreigners shall submit themselves to me.
44 the moment they got wind of me they listened.
45 The foreigners shall fade away, And shall come trembling out of their close places.
45 they came on their bellies, crawling from their hideouts.
46 The LORD lives; and blessed be my rock. Exalted be the God of my salvation,
46 Live, God! Blessings from my Rock, my free and freeing God, towering!
47 Even the God who executes vengeance for me, And subdues peoples under me.
47 This God set things right for me and shut up the people who talked back.
48 He rescues me from my enemies. Yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me. You deliver me from the violent man.
48 He rescued me from enemy anger, he pulled me from the grip of upstarts, He saved me from the bullies.
49 Therefore I will give thanks to you, LORD, among the nations, And will sing praises to your name.
49 That's why I'm thanking you, God, all over the world. That's why I'm singing songs that rhyme your name.
50 He gives great deliverance to his king, And shows lovingkindness to his anointed, To David and to his seed, forevermore.
50 God's king takes the trophy; God's chosen is beloved. I mean David and all his children - always.
