Psalm 51

HNV

MSG

1 <<For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David, when Natan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bat-Sheva.>> Have mercy on me, God, according to your lovingkindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
1 Generous in love - God, give grace! Huge in mercy - wipe out my bad record.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.
2 Scrub away my guilt, soak out my sins in your laundry.
3 For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.
3 I know how bad I've been; my sins are staring me down.
4 Against you, and you only, have I sinned, And done that which is evil in your sight; That you may be proved right when you speak, And justified when you judge.
4 You're the One I've violated, and you've seen it all, seen the full extent of my evil. You have all the facts before you; whatever you decide about me is fair.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity. In sin did my mother conceive me.
5 I've been out of step with you for a long time, in the wrong since before I was born.
6 Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts. You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
6 What you're after is truth from the inside out. Enter me, then; conceive a new, true life.
7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
7 Soak me in your laundry and I'll come out clean, scrub me and I'll have a snow-white life.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness, That the bones which you have broken may rejoice.
8 Tune me in to foot-tapping songs, set these once-broken bones to dancing.
9 Hide your face from my sins, And blot out all of my iniquities.
9 Don't look too close for blemishes, give me a clean bill of health.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.
10 God, make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life.
11 Don't throw me from your presence, And don't take your holy Spirit from me.
11 Don't throw me out with the trash, or fail to breathe holiness in me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.
12 Bring me back from gray exile, put a fresh wind in my sails!
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways. Sinners shall be converted to you.
13 Give me a job teaching rebels your ways so the lost can find their way home.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
14 Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God, and I'll sing anthems to your life-giving ways.
15 Lord, open my lips. My mouth shall declare your praise.
15 Unbutton my lips, dear God; I'll let loose with your praise.
16 For you don't delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it. You have no pleasure in burnt offering.
16 Going through the motions doesn't please you, a flawless performance is nothing to you.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
17 I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don't for a moment escape God's notice.
18 Do well in your good pleasure to Tziyon. Build the walls of Yerushalayim.
18 Make Zion the place you delight in, repair Jerusalem's broken-down walls.
19 Then will you delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, In burnt offerings and in whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer bulls on your altar.
19 Then you'll get real worship from us, acts of worship small and large, Including all the bulls they can heave onto your altar!
