Romans 3

1 So what's the advantage of being a Jew? Or what's the benefit of circumcision?
1 Is there any advantage, then, in being a Jew? Or is there any value in being circumcised?
2 Plenty in every way. First of all, the Jews were trusted with God's revelations.
2 There are all kinds of advantages. First of all, God entrusted them with his word.
3 What does it matter, then, if some weren't faithful? Their lack of faith won't cancel God's faithfulness, will it?
3 What if some of them were unfaithful? Can their unfaithfulness cancel God's faithfulness?
4 Absolutely not! God must be true, even if every human being is a liar, as it is written: So that it can show that you are right in your words; and you will triumph when you are judged.
4 That would be unthinkable! God is honest, and everyone else is a liar, as Scripture says, "So you hand down justice when you speak, and you win your case in court."
5 But if our lack of righteousness confirms God's justice, what will we say? That God, who brings wrath upon us, isn't just (I'm speaking rhetorically)?
5 But if what we do wrong shows that God is fair, what should we say? Is God unfair when he vents his anger on us? (I'm arguing the way humans would.)
6 Absolutely not! If God weren't just, how could he judge the world?
6 That's unthinkable! Otherwise, how would God be able to judge the world?
7 But if God's truth is demonstrated by my lie and it increases his glory, why am I still judged as a sinner?
7 If my lie increases the glory that God receives by showing that God is truthful, why am I still judged as a sinner?
8 Why not say, "Let's do evil things so that good things will come out of it"? (Some people who slander us accuse us of saying that, but these people deserve criticism.)
8 Or can we say, "Let's do evil so that good will come from it"? Some slander us and claim that this is what we say. They are condemned, and that's what they deserve.
9 So what are we saying? Are we better off? Not at all. We have already stated the charge: both Jews and Greeks are all under the power of sin.
9 What, then, is the situation? Do we have any advantage? Not at all. We have already accused everyone (both Jews and Greeks) of being under the power of sin,
10 As it is written, There is no righteous person, not even one.
10 as Scripture says, "Not one person has God's approval.
11 There is no one who understands. There is no one who looks for God.
11 No one understands. No one searches for God.
12 They all turned away. They have become worthless together. There is no one who shows kindness. There is not even one.
12 Everyone has turned away. Together they have become rotten to the core. No one does anything good, not even one person.
13 Their throat is a grave that has been opened. They are deceitful with their tongues, and the poison of vipers is under their lips.
13 Their throats are open graves. Their tongues practice deception. Their lips hide the venom of poisonous snakes.
14 Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.
14 Their mouths are full of curses and bitter resentment.
15 Their feet are quick to shed blood;
15 They run quickly to murder people.
16 destruction and misery are in their ways;
16 There is ruin and suffering wherever they go.
17 and they don't know the way of peace.
17 They have not learned to live in peace.
18 There is no fear of God in their view of the world.
18 They are not terrified of God."
19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, in order to shut every mouth and make it so the whole world has to answer to God.
19 We know that whatever is in Moses' Teachings applies to everyone under their influence, and no one can say a thing. The whole world is brought under the judgment of God.
20 It follows that no human being will be treated as righteous in his presence by doing what the Law says, because the knowledge of sin comes through the Law.
20 Not one person can have God's approval by following Moses' Teachings. Moses' Teachings show what sin is.
21 But now God's righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets.
21 Now, the way to receive God's approval has been made plain in a way other than Moses' Teachings. Moses' Teachings and the Prophets tell us this.
22 God's righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There's no distinction.
22 Everyone who believes has God's approval through faith in Jesus Christ. There is no difference between people.
23 All have sinned and fall short of God's glory,
23 Because all people have sinned, they have fallen short of God's glory.
24 but all are treated as righteous freely by his grace because of a ransom that was paid by Christ Jesus.
24 They receive God's approval freely by an act of his kindness through the price Christ Jesus paid to set us free [from sin].
25 Through his faithfulness, God displayed Jesus as the place of sacrifice where mercy is found by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness in passing over sins that happened before,
25 God showed that Christ is the throne of mercy where God's approval is given through faith in Christ's blood. In his patience God waited to deal with sins committed in the past.
26 during the time of God's patient tolerance. He also did this to demonstrate that he is righteous in the present time, and to treat the one who has faith in Jesus as righteous.
26 He waited so that he could display his approval at the present time. This shows that he is a God of justice, a God who approves of people who believe in Jesus.
27 What happens to our bragging? It's thrown out. With which law? With what we have accomplished under the Law?
27 So, do we have anything to brag about? Bragging has been eliminated. On what basis was it eliminated? On the basis of our own efforts? No, indeed! Rather, it is eliminated on the basis of faith.
28 No, not at all, but through the law of faith. We consider that a person is treated as righteous by faith, apart from what is accomplished under the Law.
28 We conclude that a person has God's approval by faith, not by his own efforts.
29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn't God the God of Gentiles also? Yes, God is also the God of Gentiles.
29 Is God only the God of the Jews? Isn't he also the God of people who are not Jewish? Certainly, he is,
30 Since God is one, then the one who makes the circumcised righteous by faith will also make the one who isn't circumcised righteous through faith.
30 since it is the same God who approves circumcised people by faith and uncircumcised people through this same faith.
31 Do we then cancel the Law through this faith? Absolutely not! Instead, we confirm the Law.
31 Are we abolishing Moses' Teachings by this faith? That's unthinkable! Rather, we are supporting Moses' Teachings.
