1 Samuele 20:36-42

36 E disse al suo ragazzo: "Corri a cercare le frecce che tiro". E, come il ragazzo correva, tirò una freccia che passò di là da lui.

37 E quando il ragazzo fu giunto al luogo dov’era la freccia che Gionathan avea tirata Gionathan gli gridò dietro: "La freccia non è essa di là da te?"

38 E Gionathan gridò ancora dietro al ragazzo: "Via, fa’ presto, non ti trattenere!" Il ragazzo di Gionathan raccolse le frecce, e tornò dal suo padrone.

39 Or il ragazzo non sapeva nulla; Gionathan e Davide soli sapevano di che si trattasse.

40 Gionathan diede le sue armi al suo ragazzo, e gli disse: "Va’, portale alla città".

41 E come il ragazzo se ne fu andato, Davide si levò di dietro il mucchio di pietre, si gettò con la faccia a terra, e si prostrò tre volte; poi i due si baciarono l’un l’altro e piansero assieme; Davide soprattutto diè in pianto dirotto.

42 E Gionathan disse a Davide: "Va’ in pace, ora che abbiam fatto ambedue questo giuramento nel nome dell’Eterno: L’Eterno sia testimonio fra me e te e fra la mia progenie e la progenie tua, in perpetuo". (H20-43) Davide si levò e se ne andò, e Gionathan tornò in città.

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST SAMUEL 20

David fleeing from Naioth came to Jonathan, and acquainted him with his circumstances, and entreated his favour, 1Sa 20:1-8; which Jonathan promised, and renewed the covenant with him, 1Sa 20:9-17; a scheme was formed between them, by which David might know whether Saul was reconciled to him, and he might come to court, 1Sa 20:18-23; which being tried, Jonathan found it was not safe for him to appear, 1Sa 20:24-34; of which he gave notice by the signals agreed on, 1Sa 20:35-40; and they took their leave of one another with strong expressions of affection and attachment to each other, 1Sa 20:41,42.
