2 Samuele 17:1-8

1 Poi Ahitofel disse ad Absalom: Deh! lascia che io scelga dodicimila uomini; ed io mi leverò, e perseguirò Davide questa notte;

2 e lo sopraggiungerò, mentre egli è stanco, ed ha le mani fiacche; ed io gli darò lo spavento, e tutta la gente ch’è con lui se ne fuggirà; e io percoterò il re solo;

3 e ridurrò tutto il popolo a te; l’uomo che tu cerchi vale quanto il rivoltar di tutti; tutto il rimanente del popolo non farà più guerra.

4 E questo parere piacque ad Absalom, ed a tutti gli Anziani d’Israele.

5 Ma pur Absalom disse: Deh! chiama ancora Husai Archita, ed intendiamo ciò ch’egli ancora avrà in bocca.

6 Husai adunque venne ad Absalom; ed Absalom gli disse: Ahitofel ha parlato in questa sentenza; faremo noi ciò ch’egli ha detto, o no? parla tu.

7 Ed Husai disse ad Absalom: Il consiglio che Ahitofel ha dato questa volta non è buono.

8 Poi disse: Tu conosci tuo padre, e gli uomini ch’egli ha seco, che sono uomini di valore, e che hanno gli animi inaspriti come un’orsa che abbia perduti i suoi orsacchi in su la campagna; oltre a ciò, tuo padre è uomo di guerra, e non istarà la notte col popolo.

INTRODUCTION TO SECOND SAMUEL 17

This chapter relates the advice Ahithophel gave to march out speedily with a number of men in pursuit of David, which at first seemed agreeable, 2Sa 17:1-4; but Hushai's opinion being asked, and he giving counsel to raise a larger army, which required time, and was taken to, hereby the counsel of Ahithophel was defeated, 2Sa 17:5-14; upon which he hanged himself, 2Sa 17:23; these different counsels being communicated by Hushai to the priests, they found means to transmit them to David, with an instruction to him to pass over Jordan immediately; which he did, and pitched in Gilead, and whither he was followed by Absalom, 2Sa 17:15-26; and where he met with a supply of provisions for his army from some eminent persons in and near that place, 2Sa 17:27-29.
