Números 30

1 (30-2) Y habló Moisés á los príncipes de las tribus de los hijos de Israel, diciendo: Esto es lo que Jehová ha mandado.

2 (30-3) Cuando alguno hiciere voto á Jehová, ó hiciere juramento ligando su alma con obligación, no violará su palabra: hará conforme á todo lo que salió de su boca.

3 (30-4) Mas la mujer, cuando hiciere voto á Jehová, y se ligare con obligación en casa de su padre, en su mocedad;

4 (30-5) Si su padre oyere su voto, y la obligación con que ligó su alma, y su padre callare á ello, todos los votos de ella serán firmes, y toda obligación con que hubiere ligado su alma, firme será.

5 (30-6) Mas si su padre le vedare el día que oyere todos sus votos y sus obligaciones, con que ella hubiere ligado su alma, no serán firmes; y Jehová la perdonará, por cuanto su padre le vedó.

6 (30-7) Empero si fuére casada, é hiciere votos, o pronunciare de sus labios cosa con que obligue su alma;

7 (30-8) Si su marido lo oyere, y cuando lo oyere callare á ello, los votos de ella serán firmes, y la obligación con que ligó su alma, firme será.

8 (30-9) Pero si cuando su marido lo oyó, le vedó, entonces el voto que ella hizo, y lo que pronunció de sus labios con que ligó su alma, será nulo; y Jehová lo perdonará.

9 (30-10) Mas todo voto de viuda, ó repudiada, con que ligare su alma, será firme.

10 (30-11) Y si hubiere hecho voto en casa de su marido, y hubiere ligado su alma con obligación de juramento,

11 (30-12) Si su marido oyó, y calló á ello, y no le vedó; entonces todos sus votos serán firmes, y toda obligación con que hubiere ligado su alma, firme será.

12 (30-13) Mas si su marido los anuló el día que los oyó; todo lo que salió de sus labios cuanto á sus votos, y cuanto á la obligación de su alma, será nulo; su marido los anuló, y Jehová la perdonará.

13 (30-14) Todo voto, ó todo juramento obligándose á afligir el alma, su marido lo confirmará, ó su marido lo anulará.

14 (30-15) Empero si su marido callare á ello de día en día, entonces confirmó todos sus votos, y todas las obligaciones que están sobre ella: confirmólas, por cuanto calló á ello el día que lo oyó.

15 (30-16) Mas si las anulare después de haberlas oido, entonces él llevará el pecado de ella.

16 (30-17) Estas son las ordenanzas que Jehová mandó á Moisés entre el varón y su mujer, entre el padre y su hija, durante su mocedad en casa de su padre.

Números 30 Commentary

Chapter 30

Vows to be kept. (1,2) The cases wherein vows might be released. (3-16)

Verses 1-2 No man can be bound by his own promise to do what he is already, by the Divine precept, forbidden to do. In other matters the command is, that he shall not break his words, through he may change his mind.

Verses 3-16 Two cases of vows are determined. The case of a daughter in her father's house. When her vow comes to his knowledge, it is in his power either to confirm it or do it away. The law is plain in the case of a wife. If her husband allows her vow, though only by silence, it stands. If he disallows it, her obligation to her husband takes place of it; for to him she ought to be in subjection, as unto the Lord. The Divine law consults the good order of families. It is fit that every man should bear rule in his own house, and have his wife and children in subjection; rather than that this great rule should be broken, or any encouragement be given to inferior relations to break those bonds asunder, God releases the obligation even of a solemn vow. So much does religion secure the welfare of all societies; and in it the families of the earth have a blessing.

INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS 30

Mention being made, in the latter part of the preceding chapter, of vows to be performed to the Lord, besides the sacrifices directed to; here some account is given of them, and men are charged to fulfil, and not break them, Nu 30:1,2 but as to women, if a maid, being in her father's house, made a vow in his hearing, and he silent at it, her vow stood; but if he disapproved of it, it was null and void, Nu 30:3-5 and so a wife, when she vowed a vow in the hearing of her husband, and he said not ought against it, it was valid; but if he objected to it, it stood for nothing, Nu 30:6-8, likewise a widow, or one divorced, that made a vow in her husband's house, before he died, or she was put away from him, and he did not contradict it, it remained in force and to be fulfilled; but if he made it void, it stood not, and she was forgiven, Nu 30:9-12 it being in an husband's power to confirm or make null a vow or oath, made by his wife to afflict her soul; but if he made any void after he heard them, and had been silent, he himself was to bear her iniquity, Nu 30:13-16.
