1 Reyes 22

1 Reposaron tres años sin guerra entre los sirios e Israel.

2 Y aconteció al tercer año, que Josafat rey de Judá descendió al rey de Israel.

3 Y el rey de Israel dijo a sus siervos: ¿No sabéis que es nuestra Ramot de Galaad? Y nosotros estamos quedados a tomarla de mano del rey de Siria.

4 Y dijo a Josafat: ¿Quieres venir conmigo a pelear contra Ramot de Galaad? Y Josafat respondió al rey de Israel: Como yo, así tú; y como mi pueblo, así tu pueblo; y como mis caballos, tus caballos.

5 Y dijo luego Josafat al rey de Israel: Yo te ruego que consultes hoy la palabra del SEÑOR.

6 Entonces el rey de Israel juntó los profetas, como cuatrocientos varones, a los cuales dijo: ¿Iré a la guerra contra Ramot de Galaad, o la dejaré? Y ellos dijeron: Sube; porque el Señor la entregará en mano del rey.

7 Y dijo Josafat: ¿Hay aún aquí algún profeta del SEÑOR, por el cual consultemos?

8 Y el rey de Israel respondió a Josafat: Aun hay un varón por el cual podríamos consultar al SEÑOR, Micaías, hijo de Imla; mas yo le aborrezco porque nunca me profetiza bien, sino solamente mal. Y Josafat dijo: No hable el rey así.

9 Entonces el rey de Israel llamó a un eunuco, y le dijo: trae presto a Micaías hijo de Imla.

10 Y el rey de Israel y Josafat rey de Judá estaban sentados cada uno en su silla, vestidos de sus ropas reales , en la plaza junto a la entrada de la puerta de Samaria; y todos los profetas profetizaban delante de ellos.

11 Y Sedequías hijo de Quenaana se había hecho unos cuernos de hierro, y dijo: Así dijo el SEÑOR: Con éstos acornearás a los sirios hasta acabarlos.

12 Y todos los profetas profetizaban de la misma manera, diciendo: Sube a Ramot de Galaad, y serás prosperado; que el SEÑOR la dará en mano del rey.

13 Y el mensajero que había ido a llamar a Micaías, le habló, diciendo: He aquí las palabras de los profetas a una boca anuncian al rey bien; sea ahora tu palabra conforme a la palabra de alguno de ellos, y anuncia bien.

14 Y Micaías respondió: Vive el SEÑOR, que todo lo que el SEÑOR me hablare, eso diré.

15 Vino, pues , al rey, y el rey le dijo: Micaías, ¿iremos a pelear contra Ramot de Galaad, o la dejaremos? Y él respondió: Sube, que serás prosperado, y el SEÑOR la entregará en mano del rey.

16 Y el rey le dijo: ¿Hasta cuántas veces he de conjurarte que no me digas sino la verdad en el nombre del SEÑOR?

17 Entonces él dijo: Yo vi a todo Israel esparcido por los montes, como ovejas que no tienen pastor; y el SEÑOR dijo: Estos no tienen señor: vuélvase cada uno a su casa en paz.

18 Y el rey de Israel dijo a Josafat: ¿No te lo había yo dicho? Ninguna cosa buena profetizará él acerca de mí, sino solamente mal.

19 Entonces él dijo: Oye, pues, palabra del SEÑOR: Yo vi al SEÑOR sentado en su trono, y todo el ejército de los cielos estaba junto a él, a su diestra y a su siniestra.

20 Y el SEÑOR dijo: ¿Quién inducirá a Acab, para que suba y caiga en Ramot de Galaad? Y uno decía de una manera; y otro decía de otra.

21 Y salió un espíritu, y se puso delante del SEÑOR, y dijo: Yo le induciré. Y el SEÑOR le dijo: ¿De qué manera?

22 Y él dijo: Yo saldré, y seré espíritu de mentira en boca de todos sus profetas. Y él dijo: Le inducirás, y aun prevalecerás; sal pues, y hazlo así.

23 Y ahora, he aquí el SEÑOR ha puesto espíritu de mentira en la boca de todos éstos tus profetas, y el SEÑOR ha decretado mal acerca de ti.

24 Entonces se acercó Sedequías hijo de Quenaana, e hirió a Micaías en la mejilla, diciendo: ¿Por dónde se fue de mí el espíritu del SEÑOR para hablarte a ti?

25 Y Micaías respondió: He aquí tú lo verás en aquel día, cuando te irás metiendo de cámara en cámara por esconderte.

26 Entonces el rey de Israel dijo: Toma a Micaías, y llévalo a Amón gobernador de la ciudad, y a Joas hijo del rey;

27 y dirás: Así dijo el rey: Echad a éste en la cárcel, y mantenedle con pan de angustia y con agua de angustia, hasta que yo vuelva en paz.

28 Y dijo Micaías: Si llegares a volver en paz, el SEÑOR no ha hablado por mí. En seguida dijo: Oíd, pueblos todos.

29 Así subió el rey de Israel con Josafat rey de Judá a Ramot de Galaad.

30 Y el rey de Israel dijo a Josafat: Yo me disfrazaré, y así entraré en la batalla; y tú vístete tus vestidos. Y el rey de Israel se disfrazó, y entró en la batalla.

31 Mas el rey de Siria había mandado a sus treinta y dos capitanes de los carros, diciendo: No peleéis vosotros ni con grande ni con chico, sino contra el rey de Israel.

32 Y cuando los capitanes de los carros vieron a Josafat, dijeron: Ciertamente este es el rey de Israel; y vinieron contra él para pelear con él; mas el rey Josafat gritó.

33 Viendo entonces los capitanes de los carros que no era el rey de Israel, se apartaron de él.

34 Mas un varón disparando su arco en su perfección, hirió al rey de Israel por entre las junturas y las corazas; por lo que dijo él a su carretero: Da la vuelta, y sácame del campo, que estoy herido.

35 La batalla había arreciado aquel día, y el rey estuvo en su carro delante de los sirios, y a la tarde murió; y la sangre de la herida corría por el seno del carro.

36 Y a la puesta del sol salió un pregón por el campo, diciendo: ¡Cada uno a su ciudad, y cada cual a su tierra!

37 Murió, pues, el rey, y fue traído a Samaria; y sepultaron al rey en Samaria.

38 Y lavaron el carro en el estanque de Samaria; lavaron también sus armas; y los perros lamieron su sangre, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR que había hablado.

39 Lo demás de los hechos de Acab, y todas las cosas que hizo, y la casa de marfil que edificó, y todas las ciudades que edificó, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

40 Y durmió Acab con sus padres, y reinó en su lugar Ocozías su hijo.

41 Y Josafat hijo de Asa comenzó a reinar sobre Judá en el cuarto año de Acab rey de Israel.

42 Y era Josafat de treinta y cinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó veinticinco años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Azuba hija de Silhi.

43 Y anduvo en todo el camino de Asa su padre, sin declinar de él, haciendo lo recto en los ojos del SEÑOR. Con todo eso, los altos no fueron quitados; porque aún el pueblo sacrificaba, y quemaba incienso en los altos.

44 Y Josafat hizo paz con el rey de Israel.

45 Lo demás de los hechos de Josafat, y sus valentías, y las guerras que hizo, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá?

46 Barrió también de la tierra el resto de los sodomitas que habían quedado en el tiempo de su padre Asa.

47 No había entonces rey en Edom; presidente había en lugar de rey.

48 Había hecho Josafat navíos en Tarsis, los cuales habían de ir a Ofir por oro; mas no fueron, porque se rompieron en Ezión-geber.

49 Entonces Ocozías hijo de Acab dijo a Josafat: Vayan mis siervos con los tuyos en los navíos. Mas Josafat no quiso.

50 Y durmió Josafat con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David su padre; y en su lugar reinó Joram su hijo.

51 Y Ocozías hijo de Acab comenzó a reinar sobre Israel en Samaria, el año diecisiete de Josafat rey de Judá; y reinó dos años sobre Israel.

52 E hizo lo malo en los ojos del SEÑOR, y anduvo en el camino de su padre, y en el camino de su madre, y en el camino de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que hizo pecar a Israel;

53 porque sirvió a Baal, y lo adoró, y provocó a ira al SEÑOR Dios de Israel, conforme a todas las cosas que su padre había hecho.

Chapter 22

Jehoshaphat makes a league with Ahab. (1-14) Micaiah predicts the death of Ahab. (15-28) Death of Ahab. (29-40) Jehoshaphat's good reign over Judah. (41-50) Ahaziah's evil reign over Israel. (51-53)

Verses 1-14 The same easiness of temper, which betrays some godly persons into friendship with the declared enemies of religion, renders it very dangerous to them. They will be drawn to wink at and countenance such conduct and conversation as they ought to protest against with abhorrence. Whithersoever a good man goes, he ought to take his religion with him, and not be ashamed to own it when he is with those who have no regard for it. Jehoshaphat had not left behind him, at Jerusalem, his affection and reverence for the word of the Lord, but avowed it, and endeavoured to bring it into Ahab's court. And Ahab's prophets, to please Jehoshaphat, made use of the name of Jehovah: to please Ahab, they said, Go up. But the false prophets cannot so mimic the true, but that he who has spiritual senses exercised, can discern the fallacy. One faithful prophet of the Lord was worth them all. Wordly men have in all ages been alike absurd in their views of religion. They would have the preacher fit his doctrine to the fashion of the times, and the taste of the hearers, and yet to add. Thus saith the Lord, to words that men would put into their mouths. They are ready to cry out against a man as rude and foolish, who scruples thus to try to secure his own interests, and to deceive others.

Verses 15-28 The greatest kindness we can do to one that is going in a dangerous way, is, to tell him of his danger. To leave the hardened criminal without excuse, and to give a useful lesson to others, Micaiah related his vision. This matter is represented after the manner of men: we are not to imagine that God is ever put upon new counsels; or that he needs to consult with angels, or any creature, about the methods he should take; or that he is the author of sin, or the cause of any man's telling or believing a lie. Micaiah returned not the blow of Zedekiah, yet, since he boasted of the Spirit, as those commonly do that know least of the Holy Spirit's operations, the true prophet left him to be convinced of his error by the event. Those that will not have their mistakes set right in time, by the word of God, will be undeceived, when it is too late, by the judgments of God. We should be ashamed of what we call trials, were we to consider what the servants of God have endured. Yet it will be well, if freedom from trouble prove not more hurtful to us; we are more easily allured and bribed into unfaithfulness and conformity to the world, than driven to them.

Verses 29-40 Ahab basely intended to betray Johoshaphat to danger, that he might secure himself. See what they get that join with wicked men. How can it be expected that he should be true to his friend, who has been false to his God! He had said in compliment to Ahab, I am as thou art, and now he was indeed taken for him. Those that associate with evil-doers, are in danger of sharing in their plagues. By Jehoshaphat's deliverance, God let him know, that though he was displeased with him, yet he had not deserted him. God is a friend that will not fail us when other friends do. Let no man think to hide himself from God's judgment. God directed the arrow to hit Ahab; those cannot escape with life, whom God has doomed to death. Ahab lived long enough to see part of Micaiah's prophecy accomplished. He had time to feel himself die; with what horror must he have thought upon the wickedness he had committed!

Verses 41-50 Jehoshaphat's reign appears to have been one of the best, both as to piety and prosperity. He pleased God, and God blessed him.

Verses 51-53 Ahaziah's reign was very short, not two years; some sinners God makes quick work with. A very bad character is given of him; he listened not to instruction, took no warning, but followed the example of his wicked father, and the counsel of his more wicked mother, Jezebel, who was still living. Miserable are the children who not only derive a sinful nature from their parents, but are taught by them to increase it; and most unhappy parents are they, that help to damn their children's souls. Hardened sinners rush forward, unawed and unmoved, in the ways from which others before them have been driven into everlasting misery.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO 1 KINGS 22

This chapter relates, that after three years' peace with the king of Syria, Ahab was inclined to go to war with him, to take Ramothgilead out of his hands; and he drew in Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, to join him in it, 1Ki 22:1-4, but before they went into it, they took advice, Ahab of his four hundred prophets, which Jehoshaphat not being satisfied with, a true prophet of the Lord, Micahah, was sent for, 1Ki 22:5-14 who, when he came, jeered Ahab with what his prophets had said to him; intimated that he should be killed, and explained it to him how he came to be deceived by his prophets, 1Ki 22:15-23 upon which he was smitten on the cheek by Zedekiah, one of the false prophets, and imprisoned by the order of Ahab, 1Ki 22:24-28, after which the two kings went to the battle, and Jehoshaphat was in great danger of his life; but Ahab was wounded, and died, 1Ki 22:29-40, and the chapter is concluded with an account of the reign of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, 1Ki 22:41-50, and of Ahaziah king of Israel, 1Ki 22:51-53.
