1 Samuel 18:15

Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely,
&c.] So that he could get no advantage against him, and he succeeded and was prosperous in all his enterprises, and was more and more in favour with the people:

he was afraid of him;
lest the time was drawing near that the kingdom should be rent from him, and given to David.

15 When Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he stood in awe of him.

17 Saul said to David, Behold, my elder daughter Merab, her will I give you as wife: only be valiant for me, and fight Yahweh's battles. For Saul said, Don't let my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be on him.
