he flashes destruction on the stronghold and brings the fortified city to ruin),1
you hate the one who reproves in court2 and despise him who tells the truth.3
You trample on the poor4 and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,5 you will not live in them;6 though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine.7
For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins.8 You oppress the righteous and take bribes9 and you deprive the poor10 of justice in the courts.11
Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet12 in such times, for the times are evil.13
Seek good, not evil, that you may live.14 Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is.
Hate evil,15 love good;16 maintain justice in the courts.17 Perhaps18 the LORD God Almighty will have mercy19 on the remnant20 of Joseph.
Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD God Almighty, says: "There will be wailing21 in all the streets22 and cries of anguish in every public square. The farmers23 will be summoned to weep and the mourners to wail.
There will be wailing24 in all the vineyards, for I will pass through25 your midst," says the LORD.26
Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD!27 Why do you long for the day of the LORD?28 That day will be darkness,29 not light.30
It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear,31 as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him.32
