Joshua 11:8-18

Listen to Joshua 11:8-18
8 And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as 1Great Sidon and 2Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of 3Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining.
9 And Joshua did to them 4just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
10 And Joshua turned back at that time and captured 5Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms.
11 And they struck with the sword all who were in it, devoting them to destruction; [a] 6there was none left that breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire.
12 And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, 7just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.
13 But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone; that Joshua burned.
14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed.
15 8Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, 9so Moses commanded Joshua, 10and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
16 So Joshua took all that land, 11the hill country and all the Negeb and 12all the land of Goshen 13and the lowland 14and the Arabah 15and the hill country of Israel and its lowland
17 16from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as 17Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below 18Mount Hermon. And he captured 19all their kings and struck them and put them to death.
18 Joshua made war 20a long time with all those kings.

Joshua 11:8-18 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JOSHUA 11

This chapter relates how that the kings of the northern parts of Canaan combine together against Joshua, Jos 11:1-5; and that the Lord encouraged him to fight with them, and did deliver them into his hands, who, with all their people, were smitten by him, Jos 11:6-11; and how that he took their cities, and destroyed the inhabitants of them, and took the spoil of them for a prey, Jos 11:12-15; and so became master of the whole country, both southern and northern, which is described Jos 11:16-20; and the chapter is concluded with an account of his cutting off the Anakim from various parts, which finished the conquest of the whole land, Jos 10:21-23.
