Luca 5

1 OR avvenne che, essendogli la moltitudine addosso, per udir la parola di Dio, e stando egli in piè presso del lago di Gennesaret;

2 vide due navicelle ch’erano presso della riva del lago, delle quali erano smontati i pescatori, e lavavano le lor reti.

3 Ed essendo montato in una di quelle, la quale era di Simone, lo pregò che si allargasse un poco lungi da terra. E postosi a sedere, ammaestrava le turbe d’in su la navicella.

4 E come fu restato di parlare, disse a Simone: Allargati in acqua, e calate le vostre reti per pescare.

5 E Simone, rispondendo, gli disse: Maestro, noi ci siamo affaticati tutta la notte, e non abbiam preso nulla; ma pure, alla tua parola, io calerò la rete.

6 E fatto questo, rinchiusero gran moltitudine di pesci; e la lor rete si rompeva.

7 Ed accennarono a’ lor compagni, ch’erano nell’altra navicella, che venissero per aiutarli. Ed essi vennero, ed empierono amendue le navicelle, talchè affondavano.

8 E Simon Pietro, veduto questo, si gettò alle ginocchia di Gesù, dicendo: Signore, dipartiti da me; perciocchè io son uomo peccatore.

9 Poichè spavento aveva occupato lui, e tutti coloro che eran con lui, per la presa de’ pesci che aveano fatta.

10 Simigliantemente ancora Giacomo, e Giovanni, figliuol di Zebedeo, ch’eran compagni di Simone. E Gesù disse a Simone: Non temere; da ora innanzi tu sarai prenditore d’uomini vivi.

11 Ed essi, condotte le navicelle a terra, lasciarono ogni cosa, e lo seguitarono.

12 OR avvenne che mentre egli era in una di quelle città, ecco un uomo pien di lebbra, il quale, veduto Gesù, e gettatosi sopra la faccia in terra, lo pregò, dicendo: Signore, se tu vuoi, tu puoi mondarmi.

13 Ed egli, distesa la mano, lo toccò, dicendo: Sì, io lo voglio, sii netto. E subito la lebbra si partì da lui.

14 Ed egli gli comandò di non dirlo ad alcuno; anzi va’, diss’egli, mostrati al sacerdote, ed offerisci, per la tua purificazione, secondo che Mosè ha ordinato in testimonianza a loro.

15 E la fama di lui si spandeva vie più; e molte turbe si raunavano per udirlo, e per esser da lui guarite delle loro infermità.

16 Ma egli si sottraeva ne’ deserti, ed orava.

17 ED avvenne un di que’ giorni, ch’egli insegnava; e quivi sedevano de’ Farisei, e de’ dottori della legge, i quali eran venuti di tutte le castella della Galilea, e della Giudea, e di Gerusalemme; e la virtù del Signore era quivi presente, per sanarli.

18 Ed ecco certi uomini, che portavano sopra un letto un uomo paralitico, e cercavano di portarlo dentro, e di metterlo davanti a lui.

19 E non trovando onde lo potessero metter dentro, per la moltitudine, salirono sopra il tetto della casa, e lo calaron pe’ tegoli, insieme col letticello, ivi in mezzo, davanti a Gesù.

20 Ed egli, veduta la lor fede, disse a colui: Uomo, i tuoi peccati ti son rimessi.

21 E gli Scribi e i Farisei presero a ragionare, dicendo: Chi è costui che pronunzia bestemmie? chi può rimettere i peccati, se non Iddio solo?

22 Ma Gesù, riconosciuti i lor ragionamenti, fece lor motto, e disse: Che ragionate voi ne’ vostri cuori?

23 Quale è più agevole, dire: I tuoi peccati ti son rimessi, ovver dire: Levati, e cammina?

24 Ora, acciocchè voi sappiate che il Figliuol dell’uomo ha autorità in terra di rimettere i peccati: Io ti dico disse egli al paralitico: Levati, e togli il tuo letticello, e vattene a casa tua.

25 Ed egli, in quello stante, levatosi nel lor cospetto, e tolto in su le spalle ciò sopra di che giaceva, se ne andò a casa sua, glorificando Iddio.

26 E stupore occupò tutti, e glorificavano Iddio, ed eran pieni di paura, dicendo: Oggi noi abbiam vedute cose strane.

27 E DOPO queste cose, egli uscì, e vide un pubblicano, detto per nome Levi, che sedeva al banco della gabella, e gli disse: Seguitami.

28 Ed egli, lasciato ogni cosa, si levò, e lo seguitò.

29 E Levi gli fece un gran convito in casa sua; e la moltitudine di pubblicani, e di altri, ch’eran con loro a tavola, era grande.

30 E gli Scribi e i Farisei di quel luogo mormoravano contro a’ discepoli di Gesù, dicendo: Perchè mangiate, e bevete co’ pubblicani, e co’ peccatori?

31 E Gesù, rispondendo, disse loro: I sani non han bisogno di medico, ma i malati.

32 Io non son venuto per chiamare i giusti, anzi i peccatori, a ravvedimento.

33 ED essi gli dissero: Perchè i discepoli di Giovanni, e simigliantemente que’ de’ Farisei, digiunano eglino, e fanno spesso orazioni, ed i tuoi mangiano, e bevono?

34 Ed egli disse loro: Potete voi far digiunare quei della camera delle nozze, mentre lo sposo è con loro?

35 Ma i giorni verranno, che lo sposo sarà loro tolto, ed allora in que’ giorni digiuneranno.

36 Disse loro, oltre a ciò, una similitudine: Niuno straccia un pezzo da un vestimento nuovo per metterlo sopra un vestimento vecchio; altrimenti, egli straccia quel nuovo, e la pezza tolta dal nuovo non si confà al vecchio.

37 Parimente, niuno mette vin nuovo in otri vecchi; altrimenti, il vin nuovo rompe gli otri, ed esso si spande, e gli otri si perdono.

38 Ma convien mettere il vin nuovo in otri nuovi, ed amendue si conserveranno.

39 Niuno ancora, avendo bevuto del vin vecchio, vuol subito del nuovo; perciocchè egli dice: Il vecchio val meglio.

Luca 5 Commentary

Chapter 5

The miraculous draught of fishes, Peter, James, and John called. (1-11) A leper cleansed. (12-16) A paralytic cured. (17-26) Levi called, Christ's answer to the Pharisees. (27-39)

Verses 1-11 When Christ had done preaching, he told Peter to apply to the business of his calling. Time spent on week days in public exercises of religion, need be but little hinderance in time, and may be great furtherance to us in temper of mind, as to our worldly business. With what cheerfulness may we go about the duties of our calling, when we have been with God, and thus have our worldly employments sanctified to us by the word and prayer! Though they had taken nothing, yet Christ told them to let down their nets again. We must not abruptly quit our callings because we have not the success in them we desire. We are likely to speed well, when we follow the guidance of Christ's word. The draught of fishes was by a miracle. We must all, like Peter, own ourselves to be sinful men, therefore Jesus Christ might justly depart from us. But we must beseech him that he would not depart; for woe unto us if the Saviour depart from sinners! Rather let us entreat him to come and dwell in our hearts by faith, that he may transform and cleanse them. These fishermen forsook all, and followed Jesus, when their calling prospered. When riches increase, and we are tempted to set our hearts upon them, then to quit them for Christ is thankworthy.

Verses 12-16 This man is said to be full of leprosy; he had that distemper in a high degree, which represents our natural pollution by sin; we are full of that leprosy; from the crown of the head to the sole of the foot there is no soundness in us. Strong confidence and deep humility are united in the words of this leper. And if any sinner, from a deep sense of vileness, says, I know the Lord can cleanse, but will he look upon such a one as me? will he apply his own precious blood for my cleansing and healing? Yes, he will. Speak not as doubting, but as humbly referring the matter to Christ. And being saved from the guilt and power of our sins, let us spread abroad Christ's fame, and bring others to hear him and to be healed.

Verses 17-26 How many are there in our assemblies, where the gospel is preached, who do not sit under the word, but sit by! It is to them as a tale that is told them, not as a message that is sent to them. Observe the duties taught and recommended to us by the history of the paralytic. In applying to Christ, we must be very pressing and urgent; that is an evidence of faith, and is very pleasing to Christ, and prevailing with him. Give us, Lord, the same kind of faith with respect to thy ability and willingness to heal our souls. Give us to desire the pardon of sin more than any earthly blessing, or life itself. Enable us to believe thy power to forgive sins; then will our souls cheerfully arise and go where thou pleasest.

Verses 27-39 It was a wonder of Christ's grace, that he would call a publican to be his disciple and follower. It was a wonder of his grace, that the call was made so effectual. It was a wonder of his grace, that he came to call sinners to repentance, and to assure them of pardon. It was a wonder of his grace, that he so patiently bore the contradiction of sinners against himself and his disciples. It was a wonder of his grace, that he fixed the services of his disciples according to their strength and standing. The Lord trains up his people gradually for the trials allotted them; we should copy his example in dealing with the weak in faith, or the tempted believer.
