Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth!1 For the LORD has spoken:2 "I reared children3 and brought them up, but they have rebelled4 against me.
The ox knows5 his master, the donkey his owner's manger,6 but Israel does not know,7 my people do not understand.8"
Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt,9 a brood of evildoers,10 children given to corruption!11 They have forsaken12 the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One13 of Israel and turned their backs14 on him.
Why should you be beaten15 anymore? Why do you persist16 in rebellion?17 Your whole head is injured, your whole heart18 afflicted.196
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head20 there is no soundness21-- only wounds and welts22 and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged23 or soothed with oil.247
Your country is desolate,25 your cities burned with fire;26 your fields are being stripped by foreigners27 right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.288
The Daughter of Zion29 is left30 like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut31 in a field of melons, like a city under siege.
Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors,32 we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.3310
Hear the word of the LORD,34 you rulers of Sodom;35 listen to the law36 of our God, you people of Gomorrah!3711
"The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals;38 I have no pleasure39 in the blood of bulls40 and lambs and goats.4112
When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you,42 this trampling of my courts?
Stop bringing meaningless offerings!43 Your incense44 is detestable45 to me. New Moons,46 Sabbaths and convocations47-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
Your New Moon48 festivals and your appointed feasts49 my soul hates.50 They have become a burden to me;51 I am weary52 of bearing them.
When you spread out your hands53 in prayer, I will hide54 my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.55 Your hands56 are full of blood;5716
wash58 and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight!59 Stop doing wrong,6017
learn to do right!61 Seek justice,62 encourage the oppressed.a63 Defend the cause of the fatherless,64 plead the case of the widow.6518
"Come now, let us reason together,"66 says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;67 though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.6819
If you are willing and obedient,69 you will eat the best from the land;7020
but if you resist and rebel,71 you will be devoured by the sword."72 For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.7321
See how the faithful city has become a harlot!74 She once was full of justice; righteousness75 used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!7622
Your silver has become dross,77 your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your rulers are rebels,78 companions of thieves;79 they all love bribes80 and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.8124
Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One82 of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge83 myself on my enemies.8425
I will turn my hand against you;85 I will thoroughly purge86 away your dross87 and remove all your impurities.8826
I will restore your judges as in days of old,89 your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called90 the City of Righteousness,91 the Faithful City.92"
Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent93 ones with righteousness.9428
But rebels and sinners95 will both be broken, and those who forsake96 the LORD will perish.9729
"You will be ashamed98 because of the sacred oaks99 in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens100 that you have chosen.
You will be like an oak with fading leaves,101 like a garden without water.
The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.102"
