"Who is this that darkens my counsel1 with words without knowledge?2

Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.3

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?4 Tell me, if you understand.5

Who marked off its dimensions?6 Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line7 across it?

On what were its footings set,8 or who laid its cornerstone9--

while the morning stars10 sang together11 and all the angelsa12 shouted for joy?13

"Who shut up the sea behind doors14 when it burst forth from the womb,15

when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness,16

when I fixed limits for it17 and set its doors and bars in place,18

when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther;19 here is where your proud waves halt'?20
