Preparativos para la construcción del templo

1 El rey Hiram de Tiro siempre había tenido buenas relaciones con David, así que al saber que Salomón había sido ungido para suceder en el trono a su padre David, le mandó una embajada.

2 En respuesta, Salomón le envió este mensaje:

3 «Tú bien sabes que, debido a las guerras en que mi padre David se vio envuelto, no le fue posible construir un templo en honor del SEÑOR su Dios. Tuvo que esperar hasta que el SEÑOR sometiera a sus enemigos bajo su dominio.

4 Pues bien, ahora el SEÑOR mi Dios me ha dado paz por todas partes, de modo que no me amenazan ni adversarios ni calamidades.

5 Por lo tanto me propongo construir un templo en honor del SEÑOR mi Dios, pues él le prometió a mi padre David: “Tu hijo, a quien pondré en el trono como sucesor tuyo, construirá el templo en mi honor”.

6 »Ahora, pues, ordena que se talen para mí cedros del Líbano. Mis obreros trabajarán con los tuyos, y yo te pagaré el salario que determines para tus obreros. Tú sabes que no hay entre nosotros quien sepa talar madera tan bien como los sidonios».

7 Cuando Hiram oyó el mensaje de Salomón, se alegró mucho y dijo: «¡Alabado sea hoy el SEÑOR, porque le ha dado a David un hijo sabio para gobernar a esta gran nación!»

8 Entonces Hiram envió a Salomón este mensaje:«He recibido tu petición. Yo te proporcionaré toda la madera de cedro y de pino que quieras.

9 Mis obreros la transportarán desde el Líbano hasta el mar. Allí haré que la aten en forma de balsas para llevarla flotando hasta donde me indiques, y allí se desatará para que la recojas. Tú, por tu parte, tendrás a bien proporcionarle alimento a mi corte».

10 Así que Hiram le proveía a Salomón toda la madera de cedro y de pino que este deseaba,

11 y Salomón, por su parte, año tras año le entregaba a Hiram, como alimento para su corte, veinte mil cargas^[a] de trigo y veinte mil medidas^[b] de aceite de oliva.

12 El SEÑOR, cumpliendo su palabra, le dio sabiduría a Salomón. Hiram y Salomón hicieron un tratado, y hubo paz entre ellos.

13 El rey Salomón impuso trabajo forzado y reclutó a treinta mil obreros de todo Israel.

14 Los envió al Líbano en relevos de diez mil al mes, de modo que pasaban un mes en el Líbano y dos meses en su casa. La supervisión del trabajo forzado estaba a cargo de Adonirán.

15 Salomón tenía en las montañas setenta mil cargadores y ochenta mil canteros;

16 había además tres mil trescientos capataces que estaban al frente de la obra y dirigían a los trabajadores.

17 Para echar los cimientos del templo, el rey mandó que sacaran de la cantera grandes bloques de piedra de la mejor calidad.

18 Los obreros de Salomón e Hiram, junto con los que habían llegado de Guebal,^[c] tallaron la madera y labraron la piedra para la construcción del templo.

Chapter 5

Solomon's agreement with Hiram. (1-9) Solomon's workmen for the temple. (10-18)

Verses 1-9 Here is Solomon's design to build a temple. There is no adversary, no Satan, so the word is; no instrument of Satan to oppose it, or to divert from it. Satan does all he can, to hinder temple work. When there is no evil abroad, then let us be ready and active in that which is good, and get forward. Let God's promises quicken our endeavours. And all outward skill and advantages should be made serviceable to the interests of Christ's kingdom. It Tyre supplies Israel with craftsmen, Israel will supply Tyre with corn, ( Ezekiel 27:17 ) . Thus, by the wise disposal of Providence, one country has need of another, and is benefitted by another, that there may be dependence on one another, to the glory of God.

Verses 10-18 The temple was chiefly built by the riches and labour of Gentiles, which typified their being called into the church. Solomon commanded, and they brought costly stones for the foundation. Christ, who is laid for a Foundation, is a chosen and precious Stone. We should lay our foundation firm, and bestow most pains on that part of our religion which lies out of the sight of men. And happy those who, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, for a habitation of God through the Spirit. Who among us will build in the house of the Lord?

This chapter relates Solomon's preparation for building the temple: on Hiram, king of Tyre, sending a congratulatory letter to him, he returned another to him, signifying his intention to build an house for God, and requesting him to supply him with timber, and men to work it, 1Ki 5:1-6; to which Hiram readily agreed, and sent him cedar and fir, and Solomon in return sent him food for his household; and things went on very amicably between them, 1Ki 5:7-12; the chapter concludes with an account of Solomon's workmen, where, how, and in what they were employed, 1Ki 5:13-18.
