Jeremias 26

Jeremias é Ameaçado de Morte

1 No início do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, veio esta palavra da parte do SENHOR:

2 “Assim diz o SENHOR: Coloque-se no pátio do templo do SENHOR e fale a todo o povo das cidades de Judá que vem adorar no templo do SENHOR. Diga-lhes tudo o que eu ordenar a você; não omita uma só palavra.

3 Talvez eles escutem e cada um se converta de sua má conduta. Então eu me arrependerei e não trarei sobre eles a desgraça que estou planejando por causa do mal que eles têm praticado.

4 Diga-lhes: Assim diz o SENHOR: Se vocês não me escutarem nem seguirem a minha lei, que dei a vocês,

5 e se não ouvirem as palavras dos meus servos, os profetas, os quais tenho enviado a vocês vez após vez, embora vocês não os tenham ouvido,

6 então farei deste templo o que fiz do santuário de Siló, e desta cidade, um objeto de maldição entre todas as nações da terra”.

7 Os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo ouviram Jeremias falar essas palavras no templo do SENHOR.

8 E assim que Jeremias acabou de dizer ao povo tudo o que o SENHOR lhe tinha ordenado, os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo o prenderam e disseram: “Você certamente morrerá!

9 Por que você profetiza em nome do SENHOR e afirma que este templo será como Siló e que esta cidade ficará arrasada e abandonada?” E todo o povo se ajuntou em volta de Jeremias no templo do SENHOR.

10 Quando os líderes de Judá souberam disso, foram do palácio real até o templo do SENHOR e se assentaram para julgar, à entrada da porta Nova do templo do SENHOR.

11 E os sacerdotes e os profetas disseram aos líderes e a todo o povo: “Este homem deve ser condenado à morte porque profetizou contra esta cidade. Vocês o ouviram com os seus próprios ouvidos!”

12 Disse então Jeremias a todos os líderes e a todo o povo: “O SENHOR enviou-me para profetizar contra este templo e contra esta cidade tudo o que vocês ouviram.

13 Agora, corrijam a sua conduta e as suas ações e obedeçam ao SENHOR, ao seu Deus. Então o SENHOR se arrependerá da desgraça que pronunciou contra vocês.

14 Quanto a mim, estou nas mãos de vocês; façam comigo o que acharem bom e certo.

15 Entretanto, estejam certos de que, se me matarem, vocês, esta cidade e os seus habitantes serão responsáveis por derramar sangue inocente, pois, na verdade, o SENHOR enviou-me a vocês para anunciar essas palavras”.

16 Então os líderes e todo o povo disseram aos sacerdotes e aos profetas: “Este homem não deve ser condenado à morte! Ele nos falou em nome do SENHOR, do nosso Deus”.

17 Alguns dos líderes da terra se levantaram e disseram a toda a assembleia do povo:

18 “Miqueias de Moresete profetizou nos dias de Ezequias, rei de Judá, dizendo a todo o povo de Judá: ‘Assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos:“ ‘Sião será arada como um campo.Jerusalém se tornará um monte de entulho,a colina do templo, um monte coberto de mato’.^[a]

19 Acaso Ezequias, rei de Judá, ou alguém do povo de Judá o matou? Ezequias não temeu o SENHOR e não buscou o seu favor? E o SENHOR não se arrependeu da desgraça que pronunciara contra eles? Estamos a ponto de trazer uma terrível desgraça sobre nós!”

20 Outro homem que profetizou em nome do SENHOR foi Urias, filho de Semaías, de Quiriate-Jearim. Ele profetizou contra esta cidade e contra esta terra as mesmas coisas anunciadas por Jeremias.

21 Quando o rei Jeoaquim, todos os seus homens de guerra e os seus oficiais ouviram isso, o rei procurou matá-lo. Sabendo disso, Urias teve medo e fugiu para o Egito.

22 Mas o rei Jeoaquim mandou ao Egito Elnatã, filho de Acbor, e com ele alguns homens,

23 os quais trouxeram Urias do Egito e o levaram ao rei Jeoaquim, que o mandou matar à espada. Depois, jogaram o corpo dele numa vala comum.

24 Mas Aicam, filho de Safã, protegeu Jeremias, impedindo que ele fosse entregue ao povo para ser executado.

Jeremias 26 Commentary

Chapter 26

The destruction of the temple and city foretold. (1-6) Jeremiah's life is threatened. (7-15) He is defended by the elders. (16-24)

Verses 1-6 God's ambassadors must not seek to please men, or to save themselves from harm. See how God waits to be gracious. If they persisted in disobedience, it would ruin their city and temple. Can any thing else be expected? Those who will not be subject to the commands of God, make themselves subject to the curse of God.

Verses 7-15 The priests and prophets charged Jeremiah as deserving death, and bore false witness against him. The elders of Israel came to inquire into this matter. Jeremiah declares that the Lord sent him to prophesy thus. As long as ministers keep close to the word they have from God, they need not fear. And those are very unjust who complain of ministers for preaching of hell and damnation; for it is from a desire to bring them to heaven and salvation. Jeremiah warns them of their danger if they go on against him. All men may know, that to hurt, or put to death, or to show hatred to their faithful reprovers, will hasten and increase their own punishment.

Verses 16-24 When secure sinners are threatened with taking away the Spirit of God, and the kingdom of God, it is what is warranted from the word of God. Hezekiah who protected Micah, prospered. Did Jehoiakim, who slew Urijah, prosper? The examples of bad men, and the bad consequences of their sins, should deter from what is evil. Urijah was faithful in delivering his message, but faulty in leaving his work. And the Lord was pleased to permit him to lose his life, while Jeremiah was protected in danger. Those are safest who most simply trust in the Lord, whatever their outward circumstances may be; and that He has all men's hearts in his hands, encourages us to trust him in the way of duty. He will honour and recompense those who show kindness to such as are persecuted for his sake.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 26

This chapter gives an account of Jeremiah's preaching; of his being apprehended by the people; of his defence of himself, and acquittance upon it. The time when, place where, and persons to whom the prophet delivered his discourse, are pointed at in Jer 26:1,2; the substance of it was, that if the people of the Jews would repent of their sins and turn from them, the Lord would avert the evil he had threatened them with; but if not, he would make their temple like Shiloh, and their city a curse to all the earth, Jer 26:3-6; upon hearing which the people seized him, and vowed he should die, because he had prophesied of the destruction of their city and temple, Jer 26:7-9; which the princes hearing of, came from the king's house to one of the gates of the temple, and sat as a court of judicature; to whom the priests and prophets accused Jeremiah of the above things as worthy of death, Jer 26:10,11; and before whom the prophet made his defence, alleging his mission and orders from the Lord; and therefore, instead of recanting, repeats his exhortation; and as for himself, he was not careful what they did to him; but advises them not to shed innocent blood, since it would bring evil upon them, Jer 26:12-15; upon which the princes acquit him, and declare him innocent, Jer 26:16; and this is confirmed by a like instance of Micah the prophet, in the times of Hezekiah, who prophesied of the destruction of Jerusalem, and yet was not put to death, Jer 26:17-19; and by a contrary instance of Uriah, in the then present reign of Jehoiakim, who had been put to death for the like, but wrongly, Jer 26:20-23; and, in the issue, Jeremiah, through the good office of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, particularly, was saved from being put to death, Jer 26:24.
