6 Basta a quel tale la riprensione inflittagli dalla maggioranza;

7 onde ora, al contrario, dovreste piuttosto perdonarlo e confortarlo, che talora non abbia a rimaner sommerso da soverchia tristezza.

8 Perciò vi prego di confermargli l’amor vostro;

9 poiché anche per questo vi ho scritto: per conoscere alla prova se siete ubbidienti in ogni cosa.

10 Or a chi voi perdonate qualcosa, perdono anch’io; poiché anch’io quel che ho perdonato, se ho perdonato qualcosa, l’ho fatto per amor vostro, nel cospetto di Cristo,

11 affinché non siamo soverchiati da Satana, giacché non ignoriamo le sue macchinazioni.

12 Or essendo venuto a Troas per l’Evangelo di Cristo ed essendomi aperta una porta nel Signore,

13 non ebbi requie nel mio spirito perché non vi trovai Tito, mio fratello; così, accomiatatomi da loro, partii per la Macedonia.

14 Ma grazie siano rese a Dio che sempre ci conduce in trionfo in Cristo, e che per mezzo nostro spande da per tutto il profumo della sua conoscenza.

15 Poiché noi siamo dinanzi a Dio il buon odore di Cristo fra quelli che son sulla via della salvezza e fra quelli che son sulla via della perdizione;

16 a questi, un odore di morte, a morte; a quelli, un odore di vita, a vita. E chi è sufficiente a queste cose?

6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.

7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

9 Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.

10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,

11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me,

13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.

15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?
