Douay-Rheims (RHE) New International Version (NIV)
And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place: 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming: and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them parted tongues, as it were of fire: and it sat upon every one of them. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost: and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
And when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded in mind, because that every man heard them speak in his own tongue. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
And they were all amazed, and wondered, saying: Behold, are not all these that speak Galilean? 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
And how have we heard, every man our own tongue wherein we were born? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
Parthians and Medes and Elamites and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
Jews also, and proselytes, Cretes, and Arabians: we have heard them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God. 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
And they were all astonished, and wondered, saying one to another: What meaneth this? 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
But others mocking, said: These men are full of new wine. 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. "
But Peter standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke to them: Ye men of Judea, and all you that dwell in Jerusalem, be this known to you and with your ears receive my words. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
For these are not drunk, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day: 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!
But this is that which was spoken of by the prophet Joel: 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
And it shall come to pass, in the last days, (saith the Lord), I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
And upon my servants indeed and upon my handmaids will I pour out in those days of my spirit: and they shall prophesy. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
And I will shew wonders in the heaven above, and signs on the earth beneath: blood and fire, and vapour of smoke. 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and manifest day of the Lord to come. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
And it shalt come to pass, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him, in the midst of you, as you also know: 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
This same being delivered up, by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you by the hands of wicked men have crucified and slain. 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the sorrows of hell, as it was impossible that he should be holden by it. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
For David saith concerning him: I foresaw the Lord before my face: because he is at my right hand, that I may not be moved. 25 David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
For this my heart hath been glad, and my tongue hath rejoiced: moreover my flesh also shall rest in hope. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope,
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell: nor suffer thy Holy One to see corruption. 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
Thou hast made known to me the ways of life: thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
Ye men, brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David: that he died and was buried; and his sepulchre is with us to this present say. 29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
Whereas therefore he was a prophet and knew that God hath sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins one should sit upon his throne. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.
Foreseeing this, he spoke of the resurrection of Christ. For neither was he left in hell: neither did his flesh see corruption. 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.
This Jesus hath God raised again, whereof all we are witnesses. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.
Being exalted therefore by the right hand of God and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath poured forth this which you see and hear. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
For David ascended not into heaven; but he himself said: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit thou on my right hand, 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand
Until I make thy enemies thy footstool. 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." '
Therefore let all the house of Israel know most certainly that God hath made both Lord and Christ, this same Jesus, whom you have crucified. 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
Now when they had heard these things, they had compunction in their heart and said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles: What shall we do, men and brethren? 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
But Peter said to them: Do penance: and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins. And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, whomsoever the Lord our God shall call. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."
And with very many other words did he testify and exhort them, saying: Save yourselves from this perverse generation. 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
They therefore that received his word were baptized: and there were added in that day about three thousand souls. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles and in the communication of the breaking of bread and in prayers. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
And fear came upon every soul. Many wonders also and signs were done by the apostles in Jerusalem: and there was great fervor in all. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.
And all they that believed were together and had all things common. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.
Their possessions and goods they sold and divided them to all, according as every one had need. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
And continuing daily with one accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they took their meat with gladness and simplicity of heart: 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
Praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord increased daily together such as should be saved. 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
