| 1 After five days, the Kohen Gadol, Hananyah, came down with certain Zakenim and an orator, one Tertullus. They informed the governor against Sha'ul. | 1 Five days later the high priest Ananias went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges against Paul before the governor. |
| 2 When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, "Seeing that by you we enjoy much shalom, and that excellent measures are coming to this nation, | 2 When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: "We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation. |
| 3 we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness. | 3 Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. |
| 4 But, that I don't delay you, I entreat you to bear with us and hear a few words. | 4 But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly. |
| 5 For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Yehudim throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Natzratim. | 5 "We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect |
| 6 He even tried to profane the temple. We arrested him. By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him." | 6 and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him. |
| 7 * [No text] | 7 By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him." |
| 8 * [No text] | 8 The Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true. |
| 9 The Yehudim also joined in the attack, affirming that these things were so. | 9 When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: "I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense. |
| 10 When the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Sha'ul answered, "Because I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I cheerfully make my defense, | 10 You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. |
| 11 seeing that you can recognize that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Yerushalayim. | 11 My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city. |
| 12 In the temple they didn't find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the synagogues, or in the city. | 12 And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me. |
| 13 Nor can they prove to you the things whereof they now accuse me. | 13 However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that agrees with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, |
| 14 But this I confess to you, that after the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets; | 14 and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. |
| 15 having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. | 15 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man. |
| 16 Herein I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men. | 16 "After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings. |
| 17 Now after some years, I came to bring gifts to the needy to my nation, and offerings; | 17 I was ceremonially clean when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance. |
| 18 amid which certain Yehudim from Asia found me purified in the temple, with no crowd, nor yet with tumult. | 18 But there are some Jews from the province of Asia, who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me. |
| 19 They ought to have been here before you, and to make accusation, if they had anything against me. | 19 Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin-- |
| 20 Or else let these men themselves say what injustice they found in me when I stood before the council, | 20 unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: 'It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.' " |
| 21 unless it is for this one thing that I cried standing among them, 'Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged before you today!'" | 21 Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. "When Lysias the commander comes," he said, "I will decide your case." |
| 22 But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, "When Lysias, the commanding officer, comes down, I will decide your case." | 22 He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard but to give him some freedom and permit his friends to take care of his needs. |
| 23 He ordered the centurion that Sha'ul should be kept in custody, and should have some privileges, and not to forbid any of his friends to serve him or to visit him. | 23 Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. |
| 24 But after some days, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was a Yehudi, and sent for Sha'ul, and heard him concerning the faith in Messiah Yeshua. | 24 As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, "That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you." |
| 25 As he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, "Go your way for this time, and when it is convenient for me, I will summon you." | 25 At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him. |
| 26 He hoped that way that money would be given to him by Sha'ul, that he might release him. Therefore also he sent for him more often, and talked with him. | 26 When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews, he left Paul in prison. |
| 27 But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and desiring to gain favor with the Yehudim, Felix left Sha'ul in bonds. | 27 |
