New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes! 1 Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!
Go over to Calneh and see; And from there go to Hamath the great; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory? 2 Go to Calneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near; 3 You put off the evil day and bring near a reign of terror.
Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall; 4 You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.
Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David; 5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.
Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. 6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore they shall now go captive as the first of the captives, And those who recline at banquets shall be removed. 7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.
The Lord God has sworn by Himself, The Lord God of hosts says: "I abhor the pride of Jacob, And hate his palaces; Therefore I will deliver up the city And all that is in it." 8 The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself--the LORD God Almighty declares: "I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it."
Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 9 If ten men are left in one house, they too will die.
And when a relative of the dead, with one who will burn the bodies, picks up the bodies to take them out of the house, he will say to one inside the house, "Are there any more with you?" Then someone will say, "None." And he will say, "Hold your tongue! For we dare not mention the name of the Lord." 10 And if a relative who is to burn the bodies comes to carry them out of the house and asks anyone still hiding there, "Is anyone with you?" and he says, "No," then he will say, "Hush! We must not mention the name of the LORD."
For behold, the Lord gives a command: He will break the great house into bits, And the little house into pieces. 11 For the LORD has given the command, and he will smash the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.
Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into gall, And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, 12 Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness--
You who rejoice over Lo Debar, Who say, "Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves By our own strength?" 13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, "Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?"
"But, behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel," Says the Lord God of hosts; "And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath To the Valley of the Arabah." 14 For the LORD God Almighty declares, "I will stir up a nation against you, O house of Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah."
