New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.
and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
not of works, lest anyone should boast. 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh--who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands-- 11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)--
that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.
For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,
having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
