And the word of the Lord came to me, it saying: 1 The word of the LORD came to me:
Son of man, prophesy concerning the shepherds of Israel: prophesy, and say to the shepherds: Thus saith the Lord God: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, that fed themselves: should not the flocks be fed by the shepherds? 2 "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?
You ate the milk, and you clothed yourselves with the wool, and you killed that which was fat: but my flock you did not feed. 3 You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.
The weak you have not strengthened, and that which was sick you have not healed, that which was broken you have not bound up, and that which was driven away you have not brought again, neither have you sought that which was lost: but you ruled over them with rigour, and with a high hand. 4 You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.
And my sheep were scattered, because there was no shepherd and they became the prey of all the beasts of the field, and were scattered. 5 So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.
My sheep have wandered in every mountain, and in every high hill: and my flocks were scattered upon the face of the earth, and there was none that sought them, there was none, I say, that sought them. 6 My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.
Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 7 " 'Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
As I live, saith the Lord God, forasmuch as my flocks have been made a spoil, and my sheep are become a prey to all the beasts of the field, because there was no shepherd: for my shepherds did not seek after my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flocks: 8 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,
Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 9 therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I myself come upon the shepherds, I will require my flock at their hand, and I will cause them to cease from feeding the flock any more, neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more: and I will deliver my flock from their mouth, and it shall no more be meat for them. 10 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.
For thus saith the Lord God: Behold I myself will seek my sheep, and will visit them. 11 " 'For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.
As the shepherd visiteth his flock in the day when he shall be in the midst of his sheep that were scattered, so will I visit my sheep, and will deliver them out of all the places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.
And I will bring them out from the peoples, and will gather them out of the countries, and will bring them to their own land: and I will feed them in the mountains of Israel, by the rivers, and in all the habitations of the land. 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.
I will feed them in the most fruitful pastures, and their pastures shall be in the high mountains of Israel: there shall they rest on the green grass, and be fed in fat pastures upon the mountains of Israel. 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
I will feed my sheep: and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God. 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD.
I will seek that which was lost: and that which was driven away, I will bring again: and I will bind up that which was broken, and I will strengthen that which was weak, and that which was fat and strong I will preserve, and I will feed them in judgment. 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.
And as for you, O my flocks, thus saith the Lord God: Behold I judge between cattle and cattle, of rams and of he goats. 17 " 'As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats.
Was it not enough for you to feed upon good pastures? but you must also tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures: and when you drank the clearest water, you troubled the rest with your feet. 18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?
And my sheep were fed with that which you had trodden with your feet: and they drank what your feet had troubled. 19 Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?
Therefore thus saith the Lord God to you: Behold, I myself will judge between the fat cattle and the lean. 20 " 'Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.
Because you thrusted with sides and shoulders, and struck all the weak cattle with your horns, till they were scattered abroad: 21 Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns until you have driven them away,
I will save my flock, and it shall be no more a spoil, and I will judge between cattle and cattle. 22 I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another.
And I WILL SET UP ONE SHEPHERD OVER THEM, and he shall feed them, even my servant David: he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.
And I the Lord will be their God: and my servant David the prince in the midst of them: I the Lord have spoken it. 24 I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the LORD have spoken.
And I will make a covenant of peace with them, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they that dwell in the wilderness shall sleep secure in the forests. 25 " 'I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of wild beasts so that they may live in the desert and sleep in the forests in safety.
And I will make them a blessing round about my hill: and I will send down the rain in its season, there shall be showers of blessing. 26 I will bless them and the places surrounding my hill. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.
And the tree of the field shall yield its fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be in their land without fear: and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have broken the bonds of their yoke, and shall have delivered them out of the hand of those that rule over them. 27 The trees of the field will yield their fruit and the ground will yield its crops; the people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the LORD, when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them.
And they shall be no more for a spoil to the nations, neither shall the beasts of the earth devour them: but they shall dwell securely without, any terror. 28 They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety, and no one will make them afraid.
And I will raise up for them a bud of renown: and they shall be no more consumed with famine in the land, neither shall they bear any more the reproach of the Gentiles. 29 I will provide for them a land renowned for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land or bear the scorn of the nations.
And they shall know that I the Lord their God am with them, and that they are my people the house of Israel: saith the Lord God. 30 Then they will know that I, the LORD their God, am with them and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, declares the Sovereign LORD.
And you my flocks, the flocks of my pasture are men: and I am the Lord your God, saith the Lord God. 31 You my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, are people, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign LORD.' "
