Ezekiel 8

HNV

NIV

1 It happened in the sixth year, in the sixth [month], in the fifth [day] of the month, as I sat in my house, and the Zakenim of Yehudah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there on me.
1 In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, the hand of the Sovereign LORD came on me there.
2 Then I saw, and, behold, a likeness as the appearance of fire; from the appearance of his loins and downward, fire; and from his loins and upward, as the appearance of brightness, as it were glowing metal.
2 I looked, and I saw a figure like that of a man. From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal.
3 He put forth the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between eretz and the sky, and brought me in the visions of God to Yerushalayim, to the door of the gate of the inner [court] that looks toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy.
3 He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and in visions of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes to jealousy stood.
4 Behold, the glory of the God of Yisra'el was there, according to the appearance that I saw in the plain.
4 And there before me was the glory of the God of Israel, as in the vision I had seen in the plain.
5 Then said he to me, Son of man, lift up your eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up my eyes the way toward the north, and see, northward of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.
5 Then he said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw this idol of jealousy.
6 He said to me, Son of man, see you what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Yisra'el do commit here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but you shall again see yet other great abominations.
6 And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing—the utterly detestable things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see things that are even more detestable.”
7 He brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall.
7 Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall.
8 Then said he to me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had dug in the wall, behold, a door.
8 He said to me, “Son of man, now dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.
9 He said to me, Go in, and see the wicked abominations that they do here.
9 And he said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.”
10 So I went in and saw; and see, every form of creeping things, and abominable animals, and all the idols of the house of Yisra'el, portrayed on the wall round about.
10 So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls all kinds of crawling things and unclean animals and all the idols of Israel.
11 There stood before them seventy men of the Zakenim of the house of Yisra'el; and in the midst of them stood Ya`azanyah the son of Shafan, every man with his censer in his hand; and the odor of the cloud of incense went up.
11 In front of them stood seventy elders of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising.
12 Then said he to me, Son of man, have you seen what the Zakenim of the house of Yisra'el do in the dark, every man in his chambers of imagery? for they say, the LORD doesn't see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.
12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’ ”
13 He said also to me, You shall again see yet other great abominations which they do.
13 Again, he said, “You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.”
14 Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD's house which was toward the north; and see, there sat the women weeping for Tammuz.
14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz.
15 Then said he to me, Have you seen [this], son of man? you shall again see yet greater abominations than these.
15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.”
16 He brought me into the inner court of the LORD's house; and see, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they were worshipping the sun toward the east.
16 He then brought me into the inner court of the house of the LORD, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun in the east.
17 Then he said to me, Have you seen [this], son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Yehudah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have turned again to provoke me to anger: and, behold, they put the branch to their nose.
17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose!
18 Therefore will I also deal in wrath; my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.
18 Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.”
