New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South. 1 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.
Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.
And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier
to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the Lord. 4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.
Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents. 5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.
And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land. 7 And quarreling arose between Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.
So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. 8 So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers.
Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left." 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left."
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar. 10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other. 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are--northward, southward, eastward, and westward; 14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west.
for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.
And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."
Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the Lord. 18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.
