New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 1 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old.
So Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.
Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said,
"I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. 4 "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.
And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, 5 The Hittites replied to Abraham,
"Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead." 6 "Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead."
Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. 7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites.
And he spoke with them, saying, "If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me, 8 He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf
that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you." 9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you."
Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying, 10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city.
"No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!" 11 "No, my lord," he said. "Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead."
Then Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land; 12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land
and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, "If you will give it, please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there." 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, "Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there."
And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him 14 Ephron answered Abraham
"My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead." 15 "Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead."
And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants. 16 Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.
So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded 17 So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre--both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field--was deeded
to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city. 18 to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city.
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place. 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.
