Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
Yosef was brought down to Mitzrayim. Potifar, an officer of Par`oh's, the captain of the guard, a Mitzrian, bought him from the hand of the Yishme`elim that had brought him down there. 1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
The LORD was with Yosef, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Mitzrian. 2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
His master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did prosper in his hand. 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did,
Yosef found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.
It happened from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Mitzrian's house for Yosef's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in the house and in the field. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.
He left all that he had in Yosef's hand. He didn't concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Yosef was well-built and handsome. 6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
It happened after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes on Yosef; and she said, "Lie with me." 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"
But he refused, and said to his master's wife, "Behold, my master doesn't know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand. 8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.
He isn't greater in this house than I, neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"
It happened that as she spoke to Yosef day by day, that he didn't listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her. 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
It happened about this time, that he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside. 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.
She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
It happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside, 13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
that she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, "Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice. 14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.
It happened, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and ran outside." 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."
She laid up his garment by her, until his master came home. 16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.
She spoke to him according to these words, saying, "The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me, 17 Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.
and it happened, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and ran outside." 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."
It happened, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "This is what your servant did to me," that his wrath was kindled. 19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger.
Yosef's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were bound, and he was there in the custody. 20 Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison,
But the LORD was with Yosef, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
The keeper of the prison committed to Yosef's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was the doer of it. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.
The keeper of the prison didn't look after anything that was under his hand, because the LORD was with him; and that which he did, the LORD made it prosper. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
