1 Allora tutti i figliuoli d’Israele uscirono, da Dan fino a Beer-Sceba e al paese di Galaad, e la raunanza si raccolse come un sol uomo dinanzi all’Eterno, a Mitspa.

1 Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came out as one man and assembled before the LORD in Mizpah.

|
2 I capi di tutto il popolo, e tutte le tribù d’Israele si presentarono nella raunanza del popolo di Dio, in numero di quattrocentomila fanti, atti a trar la spada.
|
2 The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand soldiers armed with swords.

|
3 E i figliuoli di Beniamino udirono che i figliuoli d’Israele eran saliti a Mitspa. I figliuoli d’Israele dissero: "Parlate! Com’è stato commesso questo delitto?"
|
3 (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, "Tell us how this awful thing happened."
|
|
4 Allora il Levita, il marito della donna ch’era stata uccisa, rispose: "Io ero giunto con la mia concubina a Ghibea di Beniamino per passarvi la notte.
|
4 So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, "I and my concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night.
|
|
5 Ma gli abitanti di Ghibea si levarono contro di me e attorniarono di notte la casa dove stavo; aveano l’intenzione d’uccidermi; violentarono la mia concubina, ed ella morì.
|
5 During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died.
|
|
6 Io presi la mia concubina, la feci in pezzi, che mandai per tutto il territorio della eredità d’Israele, perché costoro han commesso un delitto e una infamia in Israele.
|
6 I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel's inheritance, because they committed this lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
|
|
7 Eccovi qui tutti, o figliuoli d’Israele; dite qui il vostro parere, e che consigliate di fare".
|
7 Now, all you Israelites, speak up and give your verdict."
|
|
8 Tutto il popolo si levò come un sol uomo, dicendo: "Nessun di noi tornerà alla sua tenda, nessun di noi rientrerà in casa sua.
|
8 All the people rose as one man, saying, "None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house.
|
|
9 E ora ecco quel che faremo a Ghibea: l’assaliremo, traendo a sorte chi deve cominciare.
|
9 But now this is what we'll do to Gibeah: We'll go up against it as the lot directs.
|
|
10 Prenderemo in tutte le tribù d’Israele dieci uomini su cento, cento su mille e mille su diecimila, i quali andranno a cercar dei viveri per il popolo, affinché, al loro ritorno, Ghibea di Beniamino sia trattata secondo tutta l’infamia che ha commessa in Israele".

10 We'll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for all this vileness done in Israel."

11 Così tutti gli uomini d’Israele si radunarono contro quella città, uniti come fossero un sol uomo.
|
11 So all the men of Israel got together and united as one man against the city.
|
|
12 E le tribù d’Israele mandarono degli uomini in tutte le famiglie di Beniamino a dire: "Che delitto è questo ch’è stato commesso fra voi?
|
12 The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What about this awful crime that was committed among you?
|
|
13 Or dunque consegnateci quegli uomini, quegli scellerati di Ghibea, perché li mettiamo a morte, e togliam via il male da Israele". Ma i figliuoli di Beniamino non vollero dare ascolto alla voce dei loro fratelli, i figliuoli d’Israele.
|
13 Now surrender those wicked men of Gibeah so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites.
|
|
14 E i figliuoli di Beniamino uscirono dalle loro città, e si radunarono a Ghibea per andare a combattere contro i figliuoli d’Israele.
|
14 From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites.
|
|
15 Il censimento che in quel giorno si fece de’ figliuoli di Beniamino usciti dalle città, fu di ventiseimila uomini atti a trar la spada, senza contare gli abitanti di Ghibea, che ascendevano al numero di settecento uomini scelti.
|
15 At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred chosen men from those living in Gibeah.
|
|
16 Fra tutta questa gente c’erano settecento uomini scelti, ch’erano mancini. Tutti costoro poteano lanciare una pietra con la fionda ad un capello, senza fallire il colpo.
|
16 Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.
|
|
17 Si fece pure il censimento degli uomini d’Israele, non compresi quelli di Beniamino; ed erano in numero di quattrocentomila uomini atti a trar la spada, tutta gente di guerra.
|
17 Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fighting men.
|
|
18 E i figliuoli d’Israele si mossero, salirono a Bethel e consultarono Iddio, dicendo: "Chi di noi salirà il primo a combattere contro i figliuoli di Beniamino?" L’Eterno rispose: "Giuda salirà il primo".
|
18 The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go first to fight against the Benjamites?" The LORD replied, "Judah shall go first."
|
|
19 E l’indomani mattina, i figliuoli d’Israele si misero in marcia e si accamparono presso Ghibea.
|
19 The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah.
|
|
20 E gli uomini d’Israele uscirono per combattere contro Beniamino, e si disposero in ordine di battaglia contro di loro, presso Ghibea.
|
20 The men of Israel went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah.
|
|
21 Allora i figliuoli di Beniamino s’avanzarono da Ghibea, e in quel giorno stesero morti al suolo ventiduemila uomini d’Israele.
|
21 The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day.
|
|
22 Il popolo, gli uomini d’Israele, ripresero animo, si disposero di nuovo in ordine di battaglia, nel luogo ove s’eran disposti il primo giorno.
|
22 But the men of Israel encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day.
|
|
23 E i figliuoli d’Israele salirono e piansero davanti all’Eterno fino alla sera; e consultarono l’Eterno, dicendo: "Debbo io seguitare a combattere contro i figliuoli di Beniamino mio fratello?" L’Eterno rispose: "Salite contro di loro".
|
23 The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they inquired of the LORD. They said, "Shall we go up again to battle against the Benjamites, our brothers?" The LORD answered, "Go up against them."
|
|
24 I figliuoli d’Israele vennero a battaglia coi figliuoli di Beniamino una seconda volta.
|
24 Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day.
|
|
25 E i Beniaminiti una seconda volta usciron da Ghibea contro di loro, e stesero morti al suolo altri diciottomila uomini de’ figliuoli d’Israele, tutti atti a trar la spada.
|
25 This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
|
|
26 Allora tutti i figliuoli d’Israele e tutto il popolo salirono a Bethel, e piansero, e rimasero quivi davanti all’Eterno, e digiunarono quel dì fino alla sera, e offrirono olocausti e sacrifizi di azioni di grazie davanti all’Eterno.
|
26 Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD.
|
|
27 E i figliuoli d’Israele consultarono l’Eterno l’arca del patto di Dio, in quel tempo, era quivi,
|
27 And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,
|
|
28 e Fineas, figliuolo d’Eleazar, figliuolo d’Aaronne, ne faceva allora il servizio e dissero: "Debbo io seguitare ancora a combattere contro i figliuoli di Beniamino mio fratello, o debbo cessare?" E l’Eterno rispose: "Salite, poiché domani ve li darò nelle mani".

28 with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, "Shall we go up again to battle with Benjamin our brother, or not?" The LORD responded, "Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands."

|
29 E Israele pose un’imboscata tutt’intorno a Ghibea.
|
29 Then Israel set an ambush around Gibeah.
|
|
30 I figliuoli d’Israele salirono per la terza volta contro i figliuoli di Beniamino, e si disposero in ordine di battaglia presso Ghibea come le altre volte.
|
30 They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before.
|
|
31 E i figliuoli di Beniamino, avendo fatto una sortita contro il popolo, si lasciarono attirare lungi dalla città, e cominciarono a colpire e ad uccidere, come le altre volte, alcuni del popolo d’Israele, per le strade, delle quali una sale a Bethel, e l’altra a Ghibea per la campagna: ne uccisero circa trenta.

31 The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads--the one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
|
|
32 Allora i figliuoli di Beniamino dissero: "Eccoli sconfitti davanti a noi come la prima volta!" Ma i figliuoli d’Israele dissero: "Fuggiamo, e attiriamoli lungi dalla città sulle strade maestre!"
|
32 While the Benjamites were saying, "We are defeating them as before," the Israelites were saying, "Let's retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads."
|
|
33 E tutti gli uomini d’Israele abbandonarono la loro posizione e si disposero in ordine di battaglia a Baal-Thamar, e l’imboscata d’Israele si slanciò fuori dal luogo ove si trovava, da Maareh-Ghibea.
|
33 All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place on the west of Gibeah.
|
|
34 Diecimila uomini scelti in tutto Israele giunsero davanti a Ghibea. Il combattimento fu aspro, e i Beniaminiti non si avvedevano del disastro che stava per colpirli.
|
34 Then ten thousand of Israel's finest men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize how near disaster was.
|
|
35 E l’Eterno sconfisse Beniamino davanti ad Israele; e i figliuoli d’Israele uccisero quel giorno venticinquemila e cento uomini di Beniamino, tutti atti a trar la spada.
|
35 The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
|
|
36 I figliuoli di Beniamino videro che gl’Israeliti eran battuti. Questi, infatti, avean ceduto terreno a Beniamino, perché confidavano nella imboscata che avean posta presso Ghibea.
|
36 Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten. Now the men of Israel had given way before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush they had set near Gibeah.
|
|
37 Quelli dell’imboscata si gettaron prontamente su Ghibea; e, avanzatisi, passarono a fil di spada l’intera città.
|
37 The men who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.
|
|
38 Or v’era un segnale convenuto fra gli uomini d’Israele e quelli dell’imboscata: questi dovean far salire dalla città una gran fumata.
|
38 The men of Israel had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city,
|
|
39 Gli uomini d’Israele aveano dunque voltate le spalle nel combattimento; e que’ di Beniamino avean cominciato a colpire e uccidere circa trenta uomini d’Israele. Essi dicevano: "Per certo, eccoli sconfitti davanti a noi come nella prima battaglia!"
|
39 and then the men of Israel would turn in the battle. The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the men of Israel (about thirty), and they said, "We are defeating them as in the first battle."
|
|
40 Ma quando il segnale, la colonna di fumo, cominciò ad alzarsi dalla città, que’ di Beniamino si volsero indietro, ed ecco che tutta la città saliva in fiamme verso il cielo.
|
40 But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the smoke of the whole city going up into the sky.
|
|
41 Allora gli uomini d’Israele fecero fronte indietro, e que’ di Beniamino furono spaventati, vedendo il disastro che piombava loro addosso.
|
41 Then the men of Israel turned on them, and the men of Benjamin were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come upon them.
|
|
42 E voltaron le spalle davanti agli uomini d’Israele, e presero la via del deserto; ma gli assalitori si misero alle loro calcagna, e stendevano morti sul posto quelli che uscivano dalla città.
|
42 So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the desert, but they could not escape the battle. And the men of Israel who came out of the towns cut them down there.
|
|
43 Circondarono i Beniaminiti, l’inseguirono, furon loro sopra dovunque si fermavano, fin dirimpetto a Ghibea dal lato del sol levante.
|
43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.
|
|
44 Caddero, de’ Beniaminiti, diciottomila uomini, tutta gente di valore.
|
44 Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.
|
|
45 I Beniaminiti voltaron le spalle e fuggirono verso il deserto, in direzione del masso di Rimmon; e gl’Israeliti ne mieterono per le strade cinquemila, li inseguirono da presso fino a Ghideom, e ne colpirono altri duemila.
|
45 As they turned and fled toward the desert to the rock of Rimmon, the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
|
|
46 Così, il numero totale de’ Beniaminiti che caddero quel giorno fu di venticinquemila, atti a trar la spada, tutta gente di valore.
|
46 On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters.
|
|
47 Seicento uomini, che avean voltato le spalle ed eran fuggiti verso il deserto in direzione del masso di Rimmon, rimasero al masso di Rimmon quattro mesi.
|
47 But six hundred men turned and fled into the desert to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.
|
|
48 Poi gl’Israeliti tornarono contro i figliuoli di Beniamino, li sconfissero mettendoli a fil di spada, dagli abitanti delle città al bestiame, a tutto quel che capitava loro; e dettero alle fiamme tutte le città che trovarono.
|
48 The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.
