Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
The burden of Bavel, which Yesha`yahu the son of Amotz did see. 1 An oracle concerning Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw:
Set up an ensign on the bare mountain, lift up the voice to them, wave the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. 2 Raise a banner on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates of the nobles.
I have commanded my consecrated ones, yes, I have called my mighty men for my anger, even my proudly exulting ones. 3 I have commanded my holy ones; I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath-- those who rejoice in my triumph.
The noise of a multitude in the mountains, as of a great people! the noise of a tumult of the kingdoms of the nations gathered together! the LORD of Hosts is mustering the host for the battle. 4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty is mustering an army for war.
They come from a far country, from the uttermost part of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. 5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens-- the LORD and the weapons of his wrath-- to destroy the whole country.
Wail; for the day of the LORD is at hand; as destruction from Shaddai shall it come. 6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.
Therefore shall all hands be feeble, and every heart of man shall melt: 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp, every man's heart will melt.
and they shall be dismayed; pangs and sorrows shall take hold [of them]; they shall be in pain as a woman in travail: they shall look in amazement one at another; their faces [shall be] faces of flame. 8 Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.
Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a desolation, and to destroy the sinners of it out of it. 9 See, the day of the LORD is coming --a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.
For the stars of the sky and the constellations of it shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in its going forth, and the moon shall not cause its light to shine. 10 The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light.
I will punish the world for [their] evil, and the wicked for their iniquity: and I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.
I will make a man more rare than fine gold, even a man than the pure gold of Ofir. 12 I will make man scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.
Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, and the eretz shall be shaken out of its place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.
It shall happen, that as the chased roe, and as sheep that no man gathers, they shall turn every man to his own people, and shall flee every man to his own land. 14 Like a hunted gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land.
Everyone who is found shall be thrust through; and everyone who is taken shall fall by the sword. 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword.
Their infants also shall be dashed in pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be rifled, and their wives ravished. 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished.
Behold, I will stir up the Madai against them, who shall not regard silver, and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. 17 See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold.
[Their] bows shall dash the young men in pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. 18 Their bows will strike down the young men; they will have no mercy on infants nor will they look with compassion on children.
Bavel, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Kasdim' pride, shall be as when God overthrew Sedom and `Amorah. 19 Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glory of the Babylonians' pride, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.
It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be lived in from generation to generation: neither shall the `Arivi pitch tent there; neither shall shepherds make their flocks to lie down there. 20 She will never be inhabited or lived in through all generations; no Arab will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flocks there.
But wild animals of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and ostriches shall dwell there, and wild goats shall dance there. 21 But desert creatures will lie there, jackals will fill her houses; there the owls will dwell, and there the wild goats will leap about.
Wolves shall cry in their castles, and jackals in the pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged. 22 Hyenas will howl in her strongholds, jackals in her luxurious palaces. Her time is at hand, and her days will not be prolonged.
