1 The word of the LORD that came to Yirmeyahu the prophet concerning the Pelishtim, before that Par`oh struck `Aza.
1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:
2 Thus says the LORD: Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall become an overflowing stream, and shall overflow the land and all that is therein, the city and those who dwell therein; and the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.
2 This is what the LORD says: “See how the waters are rising in the north; they will become an overflowing torrent. They will overflow the land and everything in it, the towns and those who live in them. The people will cry out; all who dwell in the land will wail
3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers don't look back to their children for feebleness of hands;
3 at the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds, at the noise of enemy chariots and the rumble of their wheels. Parents will not turn to help their children; their hands will hang limp.
4 because of the day that comes to destroy all the Pelishtim, to cut off from Tzor and Tzidon every helper who remains: for the LORD will destroy the Pelishtim, the remnant of the isle of Kaftor.
4 For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines and to remove all survivors who could help Tyre and Sidon. The LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
5 Baldness is come on `Aza; Ashkelon is brought to nothing, the remnant of their valley: how long will you cut yourself?
5 Gaza will shave her head in mourning; Ashkelon will be silenced. You remnant on the plain, how long will you cut yourselves?
6 You sword of the LORD, how long will it be before you be quiet? put up yourself into your scabbard; rest, and be still.
6 “ ‘Alas, sword of the LORD, how long till you rest? Return to your sheath; cease and be still.’
7 How can you be quiet, seeing the LORD has given you a charge? Against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore, there has he appointed it.
7 But how can it rest when the LORD has commanded it, when he has ordered it to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”
