Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn't overcome it. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
There came a man, sent from God, whose name was Yochanan. 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn't recognize him. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
He came to his own, and those who were his own didn't receive him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Yochanan testified about him. He cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.'" 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "
From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
For the law was given through Moshe. Grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
This is Yochanan's testimony, when the Yehudim sent Kohanim and Levites from Yerushalayim to ask him, "Who are you?" 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
He confessed, and didn't deny, but he confessed, "I am not the Messiah." 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "
They asked him, "What then? Are you Eliyah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?"
He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as Yesha`yahu the prophet said." 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
The ones who had been sent were from the Perushim. 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent
They asked him, "Why then do you immerse, if you are not the Messiah, nor Eliyah, nor the Prophet?" 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
Yochanan answered them, "I immerse in water, but among you stands one whom you don't know. 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
He is the one who comes after me, who has come to be before me, whose sandal strap I'm not worthy to untie." 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
These things were done in Beit-Anyah beyond the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing. 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
On the next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.' 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
I didn't know him, but for this reason I came immersing in water: that he would be revealed to Yisra'el." 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
Yochanan testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
I didn't recognize him, but he who sent me to immerse in water, he said to me, 'On whoever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.' 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God." 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
Again, on the next day, Yochanan was standing with two of his talmidim, 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
and he looked at Yeshua as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
The two talmidim heard him speak, and they followed Yeshua. 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
Yeshua turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), "where are you staying?" 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
He said to them, "Come, and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.
One of the two who heard Yochanan, and followed him, was Andrai, Shim`on Kefa's brother. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother, Shim`on, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is, being interpreted, Anointed One). 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).
He brought him to Yeshua. Yeshua looked at him, and said, "You are Shim`on the son of Yonah. You shall be called Kefa" (which is by interpretation, Rock). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ).
On the next day, he was determined to go forth into the Galil, and he found Pilipos. Yeshua said to him, "Follow me." 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me."
Now Pilipos was from Beit-Tzaidah, of the city of Andrai and Kefa. 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
Pilipos found Natan'el, and said to him, "We have found him, of whom Moshe in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Yeshua of Natzeret, the son of Yosef." 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Natan'el said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Natzeret?" Pilipos said to him, "Come and see." 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.
Yeshua saw Natan'el coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Yisra'elite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
Natan'el said to him, "How do you know me?" Yeshua answered him, "Before Pilipos called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
Natan'el answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Yisra'el!" 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Yeshua answered him, "Because I told you, 'I saw you underneath the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these!" 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that."
He said to him, "Most assuredly, I tell you, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
