Douay-Rheims (RHE) New International Version (NIV)
Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
And when supper was done (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him), 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands and that he came from God and goeth to God, 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
He riseth from supper and layeth aside his garments and, having taken a towel, girded himself. 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
After that, he putteth water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered and said to him: What I do, thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet, Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me. 8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head. 9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"
Jesus saith to him: He that is washed needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all. 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you."
For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean. 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
Then after he had washed their feet and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you? 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them.
You call me Master and Lord. And you say well: for so I am. 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am.
If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Amen, amen, I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord: neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me shall lift up his heel against me, 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'
At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he. 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.
Amen, amen, I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me: and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."
When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you shall betray me. 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."
The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke. 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh? 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."
He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it? 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,
Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him. 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor.
He therefore, having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified; and God is glorified in him. 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.
If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself: and immediately will he glorify him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me. And as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now. 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now: but thou shalt follow hereafter. 36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."
Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee. 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen, I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice. 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
