And after Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim. 1 After the time of Abimelech a man of Issachar, Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir. 2 He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
And after him arose Jair, the Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty and two years. 3 He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.
And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead. 4 He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.
And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon. 5 When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim, and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Jehovah, and served him not. 6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him,
And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon. 7 he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,
And they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen years [oppressed they] all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 8 who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.
And the children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed. 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was in great distress.
And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against thee, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baalim. 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."
And Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, [Did] not [I save you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? 11 The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried unto me, and I saved you out of their hand. 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will save you no more. 13 But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!"
And the children of Israel said unto Jehovah, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day. 15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now."
And they put away the foreign gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery no longer.
Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpah. 17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head of all those living in Gilead."
