Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
And five of them were wise, and five [were] foolish. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
They that [were] foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.
But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
And the foolish said to the wise, Give us of your oil: for our lamps are gone out. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
But the wise answered, saying, [Not so]; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 9 " 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut. 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'
But he answered and said, Verily I say to you, I know you not. 12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'
Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of man cometh. 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
For [the kingdom of heaven is] as a man traveling into a far country, [who] called his own servants, and delivered to them his goods. 14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.
And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and forthwith took his journey. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.
Then he that had received the five talents, went and traded with the same, and gained other five talents. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.
And likewise he that [had received] two, he also gained other two. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.
But he that had received one, went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. 19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
And he that had received five talents, came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst to me five talents: behold, I have gained besides them five talents more. 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
His lord said to him, Well done [thou] good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
He also that had received two talents came, and said, Lord, thou deliveredst to me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents besides them. 22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'
His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
Then he who had received the one talent came, and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strewed: 24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, [there] thou hast [what is] thine. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'
His lord answered and said to him, [Thou] wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not strewed: 26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?
Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and [then] at my coming I should have received my own with interest. 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
Take therefore the talent from him, and give [it] to him who hath ten talents. 28 " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.
For to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
And cast ye the unprofitable servant into utter darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then will he sit upon the throne of his glory: 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.
And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth [his] sheep from the goats: 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
And he will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then will the King say to them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
For I was hungry, and ye gave me food: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came to me. 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
Then will the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed [thee]? or thirsty, and gave [thee] drink? 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
When saw we thee a stranger, and took [thee] in? or naked, and clothed [thee]? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came to thee? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
And the king will answer and say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] to me. 40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Then will he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry, and ye gave me no food: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
Then will they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee? 44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
Then will he answer them, saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] not to one of the least of these, ye did [it] not to me. 45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
