Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons: 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 3 I thank my God every time I remember you.
always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy
in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me.
For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,
having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.
Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again. 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
in no way alarmed by your opponents -which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God.
For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me. 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
