Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God every time I remember you, 3 I thank my God every time I remember you.
constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy
because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me.
For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,
having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.
I want you to know, beloved, that what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel, 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to everyone else that my imprisonment is for Christ; 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
and most of the brothers and sisters, having been made confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, dare to speak the word with greater boldness and without fear. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defense of the gospel; 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance. 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but that by my speaking with all boldness, Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again. 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God's doing. 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God.
For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well— 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
