Why do You stand afar off, O LORD? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
In pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, And the greedy man curses and spurns the LORD. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him. All his thoughts are, "There is no God." 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
His ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are on high, out of his sight; As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.
He says to himself, "I will not be moved; Throughout all generations I will not be in adversity." 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."
His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness. 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the hiding places he kills the innocent; His eyes stealthily watch for the unfortunate. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.
He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair; He lurks to catch the afflicted; He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
He crouches, he bows down, And the unfortunate fall by his mighty ones. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He will never see it." 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
Why has the wicked spurned God? He has said to himself, "You will not require it." 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?
You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Your hand. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer, Seek out his wickedness until You find none. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The LORD is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror. 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
