New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
O LORD, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I need you the most? 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
Proud and wicked people viciously oppress the poor. Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others. 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the LORD. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
These wicked people are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead. 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them. They pour scorn on all their enemies. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.
They say to themselves, "Nothing bad will ever happen to us! We will be free of trouble forever!" 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."
Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues. 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
They lurk in dark alleys, murdering the innocent who pass by. They are always searching for some helpless victim. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.
Like lions they crouch silently, waiting to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture their victims and drag them away in nets. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
The helpless are overwhelmed and collapse; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
The wicked say to themselves, "God isn't watching! He will never notice!" 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
Arise, O LORD! Punish the wicked, O God! Do not forget the helpless! 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
Why do the wicked get away with cursing God? How can they think, "God will never call us to account"? 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?
But you do see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in you. You are the defender of orphans. 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arms of these wicked, evil people! Go after them until the last one is destroyed! 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The LORD is king forever and ever! Let those who worship other gods be swept from the land. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will listen to their cries and comfort them. 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so people can no longer terrify them. 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
