GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
Give thanks to the LORD because he is good, because his mercy endures forever. 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Let the people the LORD defended repeat these words. They are the people he defended from the power of their enemies 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
and gathered from other countries, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
They wandered around the desert on a deserted road without finding an inhabited city. 4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
They were hungry and thirsty. They began to lose hope. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.
In their distress they cried out to the LORD. He rescued them from their troubles. 6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them on a road that went straight to an inhabited city. 7 He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.
Let them give thanks to the LORD because of his mercy. He performed his miracles for Adam's descendants. 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
He gave plenty to drink to those who were thirsty. He filled those who were hungry with good food. 9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
Those who lived in the dark, in death's shadow were prisoners in misery. They were held in iron chains 10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains,
because they had rebelled against God's words and had despised the advice given by the Most High. 11 for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
So he humbled them with hard work. They fell down, but no one was there to help them. 12 So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
In their distress they cried out to the LORD. He saved them from their troubles. 13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He brought them out of the dark, out of death's shadow. He broke apart their chains. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains.
Let them give thanks to the LORD because of his mercy. He performed his miracles for Adam's descendants. 15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
He shattered bronze gates and cut iron bars in two. 16 for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
Fools suffered because of their disobedience and because of their crimes. 17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
All food was disgusting to them, and they came near death's gates. 18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.
In their distress they cried out to the LORD. He saved them from their troubles. 19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He sent his message and healed them. He rescued them from the grave. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.
Let them give thanks to the LORD because of his mercy. He performed his miracles for Adam's descendants. 21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Let them bring songs of thanksgiving as their sacrifice. Let them tell in joyful songs what he has done. 22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.
Those who sail on the sea in ships, who do business on the high seas, 23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.
have seen what the LORD can do, the miracles he performed in the depths of the sea. 24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
He spoke, and a storm began to blow, and it made the waves rise high. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.
The sailors aboard ship rose toward the sky. They plunged into the depths. Their courage melted in [the face of] disaster. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunks, and all their skills as sailors became useless. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end.
In their distress they cried out to the LORD. He led them from their troubles. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
He made the storm calm down, and the waves became still. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
The sailors were glad that the storm was quiet. He guided them to the harbor they had longed for. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the LORD because of his mercy. He performed his miracles for Adam's descendants. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Let them glorify him when the people are gathered for worship. Let them praise him in the company of respected leaders. 32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
He changes rivers into a desert, springs into thirsty ground, 33 He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground,
and fertile ground into a layer of salt because of the wickedness of the people living there. 34 and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
He changes deserts into lakes and dry ground into springs. 35 He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs;
There he settles those who are hungry, and they build cities to live in. 36 there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.
They plant in fields and vineyards that produce crops. 37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest;
He blesses them, and their numbers multiply, and he does not allow a shortage of cattle. 38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.
They became few in number and were humiliated because of oppression, disaster, and sorrow. 39 Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
He poured contempt on their influential people and made them stumble around in a pathless desert. 40 he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.
But now he lifts needy people high above suffering and makes their families like flocks. 41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.
Decent people will see this and rejoice, but all the wicked people will shut their mouths. 42 The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
Let those who [think] they are wise pay attention to these things so that they may understand the LORD's blessings. 43 Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the LORD.
