| Young's Literal Translation (YLT) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 A Song of the Ascents. Often they distressed me from my youth, Pray, let Israel say: | 1 They have greatly oppressed me from my youth-- let Israel say-- |
| 2 Often they distressed me from my youth, Yet they have not prevailed over me. | 2 they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me. |
| 3 Over my back have ploughers ploughed, They have made long their furrows. | 3 Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long. |
| 4 Jehovah [is] righteous, He hath cut asunder cords of the wicked. | 4 But the LORD is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked. |
| 5 Confounded and turn backward do all hating Zion. | 5 May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. |
| 6 They are as grass of the roofs, That before it was drawn out withereth, | 6 May they be like grass on the roof, which withers before it can grow; |
| 7 That hath not filled the hand of a reaper, And the bosom of a binder of sheaves. | 7 with it the reaper cannot fill his hands, nor the one who gathers fill his arms. |
| 8 And the passers by have not said, `The blessing of Jehovah [is] on you, We blessed you in the Name of Jehovah!' | 8 May those who pass by not say, "The blessing of the LORD be upon you; we bless you in the name of the LORD." |
