| 1 To the Overseer. -- A Psalm of David. Deliver me, O Jehovah, from an evil man, From one of violence Thou keepest me. | 1 Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men; protect me from men of violence, |
| 2 Who have devised evils in the heart, All the day they assemble [for] wars. | 2 who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. |
| 3 They sharpened their tongue as a serpent, Poison of an adder [is] under their lips. Selah. | 3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. "Selah" |
| 4 Preserve me, Jehovah, from the hands of the wicked, From one of violence Thou keepest me, Who have devised to overthrow my steps. | 4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from men of violence who plan to trip my feet. |
| 5 The proud hid a snare for me -- and cords, They spread a net by the side of the path, Snares they have set for me. Selah. | 5 Proud men have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. "Selah" |
| 6 I have said to Jehovah, `My God [art] Thou, Hear, Jehovah, the voice of my supplications.' | 6 O LORD, I say to you, "You are my God." Hear, O LORD, my cry for mercy. |
| 7 O Jehovah, my Lord, strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of armour. | 7 O Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, who shields my head in the day of battle-- |
| 8 Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked, His wicked device bring not forth, They are high. Selah. | 8 do not grant the wicked their desires, O LORD; do not let their plans succeed, or they will become proud. "Selah" |
| 9 The chief of my surrounders, The perverseness of their lips covereth them. | 9 Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with the trouble their lips have caused. |
| 10 They cause to fall on themselves burning coals, Into fire He doth cast them, Into deep pits -- they arise not. | 10 Let burning coals fall upon them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. |
| 11 A talkative man is not established in the earth, One of violence -- evil hunteth to overflowing. | 11 Let slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down men of violence. |
| 12 I have known that Jehovah doth execute The judgment of the afflicted, The judgment of the needy. | 12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. |
| 13 Only -- the righteous give thanks to Thy name, The upright do dwell with Thy presence! | 13 Surely the righteous will praise your name and the upright will live before you. |
