New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
For the choir director: A psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be astounded. They will put their trust in the LORD. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud, or in those who worship idols. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.
O LORD my God, you have done many miracles for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.
You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand -- you don't require burnt offerings or sin offerings. 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
Then I said, "Look, I have come. And this has been written about me in your scroll: 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll.
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your law is written on my heart." 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."
I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know. 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD.
I have not kept this good news hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly.
LORD, don't hold back your tender mercies from me. My only hope is in your unfailing love and faithfulness. 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me.
For troubles surround me -- too many to count! They pile up so high I can't see my way out. They are more numerous than the hairs on my head. I have lost all my courage. 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.
Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me.
May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, "Aha! We've got him now!" 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame.
But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, "The LORD is great!" 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!"
As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord is thinking about me right now. You are my helper and my savior. Do not delay, O my God. 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
