New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
A psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, the LORD, has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from east to west! 1 The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.
From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance. 2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.
Our God approaches with the noise of thunder. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him. 3 Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages.
Heaven and earth will be his witnesses as he judges his people: 4 He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people:
"Bring my faithful people to me -- those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices." 5 "Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice."
Then let the heavens proclaim his justice, for God himself will be the judge. Interlude 6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. "Selah"
"O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel: I am God, your God! 7 "Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you: I am God, your God.
I have no complaint about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you constantly bring to my altar. 8 I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.
But I want no more bulls from your barns; I want no more goats from your pens. 9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens,
For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills. 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.
Every bird of the mountains and all the animals of the field belong to me. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine.
If I were hungry, I would not mention it to you, for all the world is mine and everything in it. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
I don't need the bulls you sacrifice; I don't need the blood of goats. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
What I want instead is your true thanks to God; I want you to fulfill your vows to the Most High. 14 Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High,
Trust me in your times of trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory." 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."
But God says to the wicked: "Recite my laws no longer, and don't pretend that you obey me. 16 But to the wicked, God says: "What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips?
For you refuse my discipline and treat my laws like trash. 17 You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you.
When you see a thief, you help him, and you spend your time with adulterers. 18 When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.
Your mouths are filled with wickedness, and your tongues are full of lies. 19 You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.
You sit around and slander a brother -- your own mother's son. 20 You speak continually against your brother and slander your own mother's son.
While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn't care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you. 21 These things you have done and I kept silent; you thought I was altogether like you. But I will rebuke you and accuse you to your face.
Repent, all of you who ignore me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. 22 "Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with none to rescue:
But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God." 23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God."
